Paprotki combines its location by Lake Paproteckie with archaeological traces, historic cemeteries and a cycling route through the village. Its history spans a settlement dating from the beginning of the Common Era to war cemeteries from 1914 and 1915; there are also traces of the history of its school and mill. Paprotki therefore offers several different points of interest to consider when planning your trip. You can decide whether to focus on the lake, cycling or historical themes when choosing a destination.

Lake and cycling route

Lake Paproteckie, by which Paprotki is located, covers 28 hectares and is up to 7.2 metres deep.

A 140-kilometre cycling route runs through Paprotki. Its route includes, among other places, Giżycko, Miłki, Paprotki, Górkło and Ryn. This makes the village part of a longer route that passes through several places. If you include the cycling route in your plans, check the current route and signage before setting off.

Cemeteries and remembrance

A First World War cemetery lies on a hill near Paprotki, about 300 metres from the Paprotki–Górkło gravel road. The site includes two mass graves containing 183 unidentified Russian soldiers, as well as 25 individual German graves with inscriptions.

There is also a small First World War cemetery in the centre of Paprotki. German soldiers who fell in the fighting in the Great Masurian Lakes region in 1914 and 1915 are buried there; individual and mass graves with inscriptions have been preserved.

There are also three war cemeteries dating from 1914 and 1915 in the vicinity of Paprotki. The largest was established 2.5 kilometres south of the village. This makes it possible to distinguish the memorial sites in the centre and on the hill from other sites in the surrounding area.

Archaeological traces and local history

Paprotki is home to a settlement and a cremation cemetery of the Bogaczew culture, dating from the beginning of the Common Era. The Paprotki archaeological settlement, with sites 6, 39, 40, 42 and 43, is listed in the monument register and the list of monuments. In contrast to the First World War memorial sites, this part of the village’s history points to a much earlier era.

The school in Paprotki was founded in 1734. The school building is considered an example of Masurian architecture. The remains of a watermill have also been preserved in the village. The school and mill remains add further aspects of local history to the archaeological sites and cemeteries.

Below Paprotki are two old Protestant cemeteries at a place known as “Kamienny Park”. If you wish to visit specific historic sites, check access arrangements in advance.
