Zabrowo: Cycling Routes and Local History

Several cycling routes pass through Zabrowo (Ząbrowo), and a memorial stone and old gravestones also commemorate its history. The routes vary in length and in whether they return to Iława or end in Siemiany. This gives you a practical way to include Zabrowo in your travel plans when choosing a route.

Cycling routes with different itineraries

A cycling route of about 20 km starts in Iława and goes via Szymbark, Ząbrowo, Segnowy, Laseczno, and Stradomno before returning to Iława. Ząbrowo lies along this circular route. The approximate distance and named stops provide a guide if you would like to include a tour that returns to its starting point in your travel plans.

The black cycling route is 23 km long and runs from Iława via Kamionka, Ząbrowo, Szymbark, Starzykowo, Piotrkowo, and Szwalewo to Siemiany. Unlike the route of about 20 km, this one ends in Siemiany. When choosing, you can therefore consider not only the stated distance but also the route format: a route that returns to Iława, or one that runs from Iława to Siemiany. Ząbrowo is included in both descriptions.

The green cycling route along the Kanał Elbląski runs via Elbląg (Rubno Wielkie), Nowakowo, Kępa Rybacka, Bielnik II, Kazimierzowo, Władysławowo, Wikrowo, Jegłownik, Gronowo Elbląskie, Różany, Zwierzno, Kępniewo, Brudzędy, Stare Dolno, Święty Gaj, Kwietniewo, Rychliki, Jelonki, Lepno, Kreki, Jarnołtowo, Zalewo, Jerzwałd, Siemiany, Piotrkowo, Starzykowo, Szymbark, Ząbrowo, Kamionka, and Iława. In addition, a cycling path more than 1,500 m long was built between Ząbrowo and Segnowy. This figure refers to the named section; by contrast, the distances of about 20 km and 23 km refer to the routes described. This distinction makes it possible to tell a single cycling path section apart from the total distance of a tour when planning.

The Osa River and the history of Zabrowo

Zabrowo lies on the Osa River. A footbridge was also built over the river in Zabrowo. The river and the bridge are specific local features alongside the cycling routes. If you also consider proximity to a river when choosing your destination, the Osa is a distinctive landmark in Zabrowo.

A memorial stone commemorates the history of Ząbrowo. The stone was found in a field by residents of the Sołectwo Ząbrowo and subsequently made into a memorial by stonemason Bohdan Lewczyk. The discovery and Lewczyk’s work give this memorial site a specific local connection: it was made from a stone that residents of the community discovered in a field and was expressly dedicated to the history of Ząbrowo.

Old gravestones bearing Polish family names have also been preserved in the cemetery in Ząbrowo: Derkowski, Józefski (Josewski), Majewski, Rybicki, Kukła, Murawski, Jałowski, Granica, Tadzki (Tatzki), and Laskowski. Kingerske (Kingerski) may also be among the names passed down. The spelling variants are shown here; the attribution of Kingerske is explicitly uncertain.
