Marksewo on Lake Marksoby

Marksewo lies on the western shore of Lake Marksoby. The village is defined by a distinctive combination of waterside landscape, roadside development, and historic buildings. The lakeside location and the village’s layout offer two useful reference points for planning a trip.

Lake Marksoby: Shoreline and Landscape

Lake Marksoby covers 154.6 hectares and is 4,000 meters long and 550 meters wide. Its dimensions describe an elongated lake; Marksewo lies on its western shore. The lake is shallow, but its shores vary: the eastern shore is steep, while the other shores are flat. The lake is also a quiet zone.

Underwater vegetation is also part of the lake’s character: waterweed and stoneworts form underwater meadows along the shores. Lake Marksoby is a bream-type lake; fish species found there include bream, tench, roach, bleak, pike, perch, and eels. Marksewo retains wooden and masonry buildings dating from the late 19th century. Historic buildings include a former schoolhouse from this period, now used as a community hall and listed in the voivodeship heritage register. A closed Evangelical cemetery dates from the early 20th century and is also listed in the heritage register. Other historic structures include Shelter No. 28, a passive shelter for an infantry squad dating from 1918. The schoolhouse, cemetery, and shelter each represent different functions and periods; the cemetery’s closed status is part of its description.

Protected Areas and Orientation

As of June 30, 2017, both the Spychowski Protected Landscape Area and the Puszcza Piska Natura 2000 Special Protection Area for Birds had been designated for Marksewo. Anyone planning an excursion there should check the current boundaries of the protected areas and applicable visitor rules in advance.

Nearby, National Road 58 runs along the northern shore of Lake Marksoby. It leads from Szczytno via Babięta toward Mrągowo. Two different details are therefore important for orientation: Marksewo lies on the western shore, while the described road runs along the northern shore.
