At the entrance to Ołownik from the direction of Węgorzewo lies a large, neglected park. Nine beech trees there are protected as natural monuments. Ołownik and Pochwałki lie within the Doliny Gołdapy i Węgorapy Landscape Protection Area. The area's connection with nature is evident both in specific features of the village and in its wider protected-area setting.
A historic oak avenue leads to Ołownik and has been divided by the state border since 1946. A weir and a small hydroelectric plant also stand on the Węgorapa. Both structures were built before 1939 and are privately owned. Together, the park and natural monuments, the avenue's border history and the historic waterworks offer different points of interest as you decide which aspects of a destination matter most to you.
Kayaking Route and Conditions on the Węgorapa
The Węgorapa near Ołownik is a kayaking route with natural obstacles such as fallen trees and branches. At the hydroelectric facility, kayaks should land on the right bank at the water intake. They are then carried 150 m along the road to a point downstream of the plant; re-entry is before the bridge, from a village green. You may be able to stay overnight on this green.
Continuing downstream is possible only when water levels are high; at low water, it depends on whether the plant is operating. Check these conditions before paddling, as they are key to planning the next leg. This lets you plan the portage, re-entry and onward journey separately, rather than relying solely on the river route.
Further along its regional course, the Węgorapa is canalized in Węgorzewo. It then flows calmly through meadows and eventually forms the gorge known as Jar Węgorapy, which ends at the floodplains upstream of the hydroelectric plant in Ołownik. This progression—from the canalized section to the meadow stretch and then the gorge—offers a different view of the river from the specific obstacles and portage points near Ołownik.
