Between the Baltic Sea and Liwia Łuża
From the lighthouse in Niechorze, the sandy spit stretches eastwards to the centre of Pogorzelica. It separates the coastal lake Liwia Łuża from the Baltic Sea. The Liwka Canal is another prominent feature: it is about one kilometre long, forms the natural boundary between Pogorzelica and Niechorze, and connects the lake with the waters of the Baltic Sea. The distinction is clear for orientation: the spit separates the lake and sea, while the canal connects their waters and also marks the boundary between the two places.
The lake and its shores lie entirely within the 220-hectare “Jezioro Liwia Łuża” ornithological reserve. The lake is home to a large breeding population of mute swans. This means that, alongside the beach, the landscape around the lake is also a feature of Pogorzelica’s immediate surroundings. Beach and dunes
Pogorzelica’s wide beach is characterised by gently shaped sand dunes covered with grasses and pines. There are also large, shifting sand dunes in the eastern part of the resort. The beach dunes are gently shaped and covered with vegetation, while the dunes in the east are large and shifting. This means Pogorzelica’s dune landscape cannot be reduced to a single image. If you are choosing a coastal resort with a landscape that extends beyond the beach, this contrast gives you a concrete impression of the place’s character.
