The sandy coastline is shaped by dunes and cliffs. The green surroundings also include three natural monuments, among them old elms and a pedunculate oak. This distinguishes two different natural features of the town: the coastal formations and individual, specifically named trees. Bałtycki Krzyż Nadziei and the Sanctuary
The Bałtycki Krzyż Nadziei is a replica of the cross on Giewont. It was erected in May 2007 in the square on Nadmorska Street in Pustkowo. The cross is 19 metres high and weighs 4.5 tonnes. As a replica of the cross on Giewont, the local landmark is linked to a specifically named model. Its size, location and date of construction provide concrete points of reference for the town’s religious heritage.
The “Sursum Corda” Sanctuary is located at the foot of the cross. It is an open-air sanctuary and is described as the only one of its kind in Poland. It is also the starting point for many pilgrimages, including a walking pilgrimage to Jasna Góra and a motorcycle pilgrimage to the cross on Giewont. The examples differ both in their means of travel and in their destination. Together, the cross, sanctuary and pilgrimages show different aspects of the religious connection that shapes Pustkowo.
Trail and Activities
The black-marked Western Connector Trail is about 3 kilometres long and runs between Pustkowo and Pobierowo. In Pustkowo, it begins on Słoneczna Street, follows Nadmorska Street and continues to the Bałtycki Krzyż Nadziei. The trail description therefore gives both its approximate length and specific streets and a named destination. It was last updated in February 2020; since trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting out.
