Dobrzany: City History and Hiking Trails

Dobrzany brings together two themes for planning a trip: the town’s history and architecture, and hiking trails that pass through it. Its historical legacy includes a medieval town layout, rebuilding after the fire of 1781, and fortifications dating back much further. Two trails also cross in Dobrzany, and the town lies on a longer route between Stargard and Recz. You can therefore plan your trip around architecture and history, or around a section of a hiking route. The buildings and routes offer different perspectives: individual monuments, sites on different sides of the town, and trails that stretch for many kilometres.
The Church and Reconstruction
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel dates from 1782 to 1784. The building was designed by David Gilly and is the only surviving building he designed in Dobrzany. The church is listed in the register of monuments under number A-1210. The churchyard also dates from before 1781 and is listed together with the church under the same number.
Dobrzany’s urban fabric combines a medieval town layout with the reconstruction carried out in the 18th century after the fire of 1781. Gilly’s reconstruction plan called for a regular arrangement of residential plots, each intended for two buildings with their gable ends facing the street. The town’s history therefore encompasses both the older layout and a later, planned reorganisation. The church and the town plan point to different aspects of this reconstruction: an individual building and the arrangement of residential plots.
Early Medieval Fortifications
The fortifications also show just how far back Dobrzany’s historical traces go. East of the town is an early medieval ring-shaped hillfort with a double earthen rampart, dated to the 9th–10th centuries. To the west is an early medieval fortified site dating from the 11th–12th centuries. The two sites differ both in location and in date. Together with the medieval town layout and the church, they trace a span of history from the early medieval fortifications to the 18th-century reconstruction.
Hiking Trails and Routes
The green Wzniesienia Moreny Czołowej trail and the red Stargard–Recz trail cross in Dobrzany. The green trail is 51 kilometres long and passes through Dobrzany. Along the way, you can observe landforms shaped by the glacial moraine landscape. The red Hetman Stefan Czarniecki Trail runs for 62.5 kilometres from Stargard to Recz and also passes through Dobrzany. The town is at kilometre 41.3 of this trail.

The trail commemorates the stationing of Polish troops under the command of Hetman Stefan Czarniecki in the region in 1657.
