Rydzyna: Castle History, Market Square and Park
Accommodation in Rydzyna
Rydzyna can be explored through several closely connected themes in the townâs history: the castle, the market square and the park. There is also a castle trail with stops in other places, as well as a forest cycling route that reaches Rydzyna. This gives you a choice when planning your visit: architecture and urban layout, a stay surrounded by greenery, or a route beyond the town.
Castle and Town History
Rydzyna and the townâs entire residential and urban complex are listed among Polandâs historic monuments. The complex includes the castle, an extensive park, monumental auxiliary and service buildings, and a garden area with a shooting-range building. The castle was built at the end of the 17th century on the walls of a Gothic castle dating from the early 15th century. Visitors interested in architecture can therefore identify two very distinct periods of construction in the same building.
The Evangelical church is also one of the townâs notable historic buildings. It was built between 1779 and 1783 to a design by I. Graff. The castle itself was added to the list of historic monuments by the President of the Republic of Poland in March 2017. Together with the listing of the entire residential and urban complex, this shows that both the castle itself and the town layout are part of Rydzynaâs heritage.
Market Square and Town Layout
The market square retains the form it acquired when the town was founded at the beginning of the 15th century. At the same time, it forms the centre of the town layout dating from the 18th century. These two historical connections make the square a good focus for anyone who wants to understand not only individual buildings but also how a place developed. The ensemble of townhouses is characterised by buildings dating predominantly from the 18th century. The castle and market square offer different perspectives: the castleâs architectural history takes centre stage in one, while the other reflects the evolution of the urban space.
Castle Park and Trails
The castle park covers about 12 hectares. Its old trees include lime avenues and a chestnut avenue. The park is also home to one of the largest stands of flowering ivy in Greater Poland, which is under strict protection. These features give the park a distinct appeal alongside the buildings: tree-lined avenues and protected plant life are just as much a part of Rydzyna as the castle and market square.
The castle trail begins in front of Rydzyna Castle and runs through the castle park. From there, it passes through Moraczewo, Kaczkowo and Tarnowa ĆÄ ka, before reaching Czernina Castle. When planning your route, you can take into account both the section through the park and the sequence of named places. The forest cycling route reaches Rydzyna along paved forest roads. The two routes offer different perspectives: the castle trail leads from one castle to another, while the cycling route approaches Rydzyna via forest roads. Before planning your visit, check the details of the castle trail if you intend to follow its route.
