Leszno – History and Unique Experiences
Accommodation in Leszno
Leszno combines a distinctive historic townscape with cultural and leisure activities that appeal to a wide range of interests. Buildings, a permanent exhibition, murals and a history trail tell the story of the city from different perspectives. There is also a free-fall simulator at the airfield, a section of the Way of St. James and an air show held every year in June. This gives you a choice between historical discoveries, a unique activity and a specific event date when planning your stay.
The history of the city in its historic townscape
Leszno’s preserved historic street plan is home to the town hall, the collegiate church, the synagogue, former Protestant churches and the residence of the city’s former lords. This selection brings the city’s different historical connections to light without reducing them to a single type of building. If you are interested in the history of the city, you can explore these buildings as different starting points for learning about Leszno.
St. Nicholas Church was rebuilt after 1680 and serves as the family mausoleum of the Leszczyński family. The synagogue has two distinct phases of construction: its Baroque main building dates from the 18th century, while the tower was added in 1905. Sułkowski Palace is a Baroque residence; it acquired its present appearance in the mid-18th century after alterations made following several fires. Together, these details offer different insights into the reconstruction, expansion and transformation of historic buildings.
Exhibitions and traces in the city
The Leszno Regional Museum has a permanent exhibition dedicated to the city’s history from the 16th to the 20th century. It includes a Gothic monstrance from St. Nicholas Church; a selection of Jewish ritual objects is also on display. These exhibits offer different ways of exploring the city’s history: through a sacred object and through artefacts of Jewish culture. If you would like to focus your visit on culture, the museum offers specific themes to explore.
Portraits of well-known figures can also be found on Leszno’s streets. The murals include the composer Roman Maciejewski, the poet Stanisław Grochowiak and the racing driver Alfred Smoczyk. The subjects represent different fields—music, literature and motor racing—and add individual names to the city’s historic buildings. This offers a different perspective from the chronological account of the city’s history in the permanent exhibition.
Activities and reasons to visit
In the Zatorze district, the game “Szlakiem Zatorzaków” takes you on a history trail on foot through the history of the city and district. It features twelve numbered, distinctive posts and puzzles. The activity combines exercise with questions about local history. If you prefer to explore through a playful challenge, this is quite different from looking at historic architecture or visiting an exhibition.
For a unique activity, the FreeFlyCenter wind tunnel is located at Leszno Airfield. Visitors can try out the free-fall simulator. Another reason to plan a trip is Antidotum AirShow Leszno: the two-day air show takes place every year in June. If you are interested, you can use this recurring June event as a reference point when planning your trip.
The Way of St. James also passes through Leszno. The Greater Poland section begins on the outskirts of the city, in the Grzybowo district. This location marks a specific starting point for exploring the route, but does not provide information about its length or walking time. Leszno therefore offers a connection to hiking as well as to city history, culture and aviation experiences to help you choose the focus of your trip.
