Owińska: Monastic history, landscape park and activities
Accommodation in Owińska
Owińska can be explored from several perspectives: Cistercian history, St. Nicholas Church, the von Treskow Palace and its landscape park, as well as opportunities for activities on the water. These themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: religious and architectural history sit alongside a designed park landscape and seasonal leisure activities. You can decide whether local history, garden design or an active day on the water will be the main draw for you.
Monastery and religious architecture
The Cistercian monastery was remodeled based on designs by Jan Catenazzi; walls from the 13th century may have been used in the process. This possible reuse introduces an older historical layer, while Catenazzi's design relates to the remodeling. Another turning point was the partial fire on Good Friday in 1720, after which Pompeo Ferrari completed the reconstruction. The building's history therefore cannot be reduced to a single phase: the design, the possible medieval walls and the reconstruction belong to different stages.
St. Nicholas Church is the oldest historic building in Owińska. It is also one of the oldest and most valuable religious buildings in Poznań County. It is therefore a prominent landmark both in the history of the town and among the county's religious buildings.
Palace and landscape park
The attribution of the design of von Treskow Palace remains uncertain. It was probably designed by Berlin architects Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Franciszek Catel; more recent research suggests David Gilly as a possible designer. The palace is surrounded by a landscape park with a pond, mature trees and deciduous trees protected as natural monuments. The park was laid out in the early 19th century based on a design by Peter Joseph Lenné, who was director of the gardens in Berlin for many years. The uncertain attribution of the palace's design thus complements the park's documented history.
Other aspects of Owińska
The Aromatorium – Biblioteka Zapachów (Library of Scents) – opened on February 24, 2023, at the Special Centre for Blind Children in Owińska. This extends the town's history beyond older architectural and park-related themes into more recent times. Educational activities for students at the Special Education Centre for Blind Children take place daily in the Park Orientacji Przestrzennej. Tourists and organized groups can visit the park at designated times or by prior reservation.
Water and getting around
The water-ski and wakeboard cable lift in Owińska is 160 meters long and allows speeds of over 40 km/h. Check the operator's latest opening details before including the lift in your plans. The AKWEN Tropicana outdoor swimming pool has two swimming areas: one for swimmers and one for non-swimmers; the water in the non-swimmer area is up to 120 centimeters deep. It operates seasonally; check current operating details before you travel. The bridge is also useful for getting around on foot or by bike: a pedestrian and cycle bridge in Owińska crosses the Warta River.
