Tuchorza: Park History and Churches
Accommodation in Tuchorza
Tuchorza is known for its historic manor park, churches from different periods, and a cycling route through the village. The village’s history is reflected in very different ways: from 19th-century park design and surviving buildings to a memorial commemorating a crime from the Second World War. There are also practical points to help you plan your trip, including the cycle route’s length and surface.
A Manor Park with a Long History
In the northeast of Tuchorza lies a 6.32-hectare manor park whose origins date back to 1732. In the 19th century, it was redesigned as a landscape park with a pond and a viewing mound.
Notable trees in the park include an oak with a circumference of 400 centimetres, a beech with a circumference of 380 centimetres, and a black pine with a circumference of 330 centimetres. Those interested in historic parks will find striking natural features here as well as landscape design. The Szarka River also flows north of Tuchorza.
Churches and Architectural History
The former Protestant Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in 1905–1906 in the Neo-Baroque style, in the manor park. It has a single nave and a chancel closed on five sides. The upper part of the clock tower is octagonal. Inside are a Neo-Baroque organ case, a stone baptismal font in Neo-Gothic forms, and stained-glass windows in the chancel. East of the church stands a Neo-Gothic burial chapel of the von Kottwitz family, dating from around 1880.
The Church of the Holy Trinity tells a different story. It was built in 1998–1999 on the site of a historic wooden church dating from 1732, which burned down on the night of 7–8 February 1997. The exterior of the present brick building was clad in boards to make it resemble the old church. A weather vane on the bell tower is the only surviving piece of the former church. The new altar, with a figure of the Holy Trinity, was created by Poznań sculptor Roman Kosmala.
Buildings at the edge of the park also add to the character of the village: on its south side stands an early 20th-century parsonage, now used as a rectory. On the west side is a school building dating from the late 19th century.
Memorial Site and Local History
The Tuchorza crime memorial commemorates the execution by hanging of 15 Poles on 9 July 1942. It stands west of the village, on a wooded dune hill along the road to Karna. Its exact location and the events it commemorates make this site an important part of local history, adding a solemn note alongside the history of the park and its buildings.
Cultural life also includes “Tuchorzacy,” a singing group that performs both as a group and as a men’s choir. The village’s character is shaped not only by historic buildings and memorial sites, but also by community involvement in music.
Cycle Route and Getting Around
The “Drewniane budownictwo ludowe” cycle route passes through Tuchorza and is 20 kilometres long. The approximate riding time, excluding breaks, is three hours. The route follows both paved and unpaved paths and is of medium difficulty.
A useful point to keep in mind when finding your way around: the railway station named after Tuchorza is in the village of Stara Tuchorza, farther south. When choosing accommodation in Tuchorza, you can decide whether to focus your search on the park and architectural history or the cycle route.
