Swimming and leisure at Jezioro Czarownic
The KÄ…pielisko nad Jeziorem Czarownic beach is located in the leisure complex at Jezioro Czarownic in Nowe. The sandy beach and piers define the swimming area; the complex also has beach volleyball courts. A restaurant, toilet and covered shelters round out the facilities on site. Swimming is available seasonally, so plan a swimming day for the appropriate time of year. If you want to use a particular facility, check the local information before your visit.

Church and wall paintings
The parish church of St Matthew in Nowe was built around the middle of the 14th century on the site of a wooden place of worship. The church contains Gothic wall paintings dating from the 14th to the 15th century. They were uncovered and conserved during renovation work in 1913. Their date range therefore extends beyond the church’s approximate construction period and into the 15th century; the building’s history and the paintings can be viewed as distinct historical layers.

City walls and castle
The surviving city walls of Nowe are about 550 metres long. The castle was built after the town was founded in the mid-14th century, at the northeastern corner of the city walls, and was connected to them. The walls give an approximate sense of the scale of the surviving fortifications; the castle’s location and connection to them explain its relationship to the town’s defences. Compared with the parish church, the history has a different starting point: the church was built on the site of a wooden place of worship, while the castle was incorporated into the walls after the town was founded. This lets you distinguish between a cultural focus on religious architecture and wall paintings, on the one hand, and town fortifications, on the other.
