Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship: Medieval History, Lakes and Unique Discoveries

The Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship offers a variety of reasons to visit: medieval cityscapes, archaeological insights, railway history and a lakeside landscape with trails for different activities. Medieval cityscapes and archaeological history

Toruń is an exceptionally well-preserved medieval European centre of trade and administration on the Vistula. The medieval city includes the ruins of the Teutonic Knights' castle, as well as the Old Town and New Town, which are encircled by a ring of defensive walls. The original street layout, Gothic parish churches and numerous medieval brick houses have also been preserved. Those interested in urban history and architecture can discover several aspects of the medieval cityscape here: the fortifications, the street layout, and the churches and residential buildings.

The Biskupin Archaeological Reserve offers a different way to explore the past. It features a reconstruction of a fortified settlement from the transition between the Bronze and Iron Ages, associated with the Lusatian culture. At the archaeological reserve, interpreters demonstrate prehistoric crafts during the tourist season and at museum events. These include shaping vessels and making tools from flint and stone. This lets you focus your visit on specific craft activities, rather than solely on the reconstructed settlement structures.

Chełmno also preserves striking evidence of the Middle Ages: five Gothic churches and an almost intact medieval town layout. Museums, views and regional traditions

The Narrow Gauge Railway Museum in Wenecja is a branch of the Muzeum Ziemi Pałuckiej in Żnin and is one of Europe's largest open-air narrow-gauge railway museums. Exhibits include steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, draisines, historic carriages, tracks and other railway equipment. Guided tours and draisine rides add to the museum experience; during the summer season, themed events are held for children and adults. Those especially interested in technology and transport history can plan their visit around these exhibits and activities.

In Kruszwica, the Mysia Wieża is the only surviving remnant of a fortified castle built by King Casimir the Great around 1350. From its viewing platform, you can look out over Lake Gopło, the peninsula, the landscape of Kuyavia and Kruszwica's historic architecture, including its Romanesque collegiate church. The site thus combines a single medieval structure with wide-ranging views of the landscape and architecture.

A different tradition awaits you in Ciechocinek: salt has been produced there for almost two centuries using the same simple tools, and so-called “warzelnik” workers still boil it by hand. The town's striking structures also include three monumental wooden graduation towers. Together, they are 1,742.3 metres long and almost 16 metres high. Lakeside landscapes and activities in Brodnica Landscape Park

Brodnica Landscape Park has more than 40 lakes, including seven with an area of over 100 hectares. Most are narrow, elongated ribbon lakes with steep, wooded shores. This landscape defines the character of the area: stretches of water, elongated lakes and wooded banks provide a setting for a variety of outdoor activities.

The landscape park has numerous hiking, cycling, canoeing and horse-riding trails. You can tailor your time outdoors to your preferred activity: on foot, by bike, on the water or on horseback.
