Landscapes on Two Scales
The OChK Doliny Drwęcy covers 4,893.53 hectares within the rural municipality of Brodnica. This protected landscape area includes ecologically valuable river valleys and lake channels. Both landscape forms shape the natural environment: alongside the Drwęca Valley, the lake channels are also an important part of the protected area.
Brodnicki Landscape Park is a separate area. It covers 17,000 hectares and extends across the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, with 12,349 hectares, and the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, with 4,336 hectares. The park includes six municipalities: Zbiczno, Jabłonowo Pomorskie, Brodnica, Brzozie, Biskupiec Pomorski and Kurzętnik. The 4,893.53 hectares refer to the share of the OChK within the rural municipality of Brodnica, while the 17,000 hectares refer to the larger landscape park.
Routes and Activities
You can hike, kayak and cycle in the park within the rural municipality of Brodnica. This lets you choose between getting around on foot, by bike or on the water. Hiking, cycling, canoeing and educational trails have also been designated in the municipality. If you plan to follow specific routes, check local conditions in advance.
A municipal notice from 2021 announced the official opening of the combined pedestrian and cycle path from Brodnica to Osiek on 25 July. If you would like to include this route in your plans, check its condition locally.
Church, Bridge and Harvest Festival Tradition
The parish church pw. św. św. Fabiana i Sebastiana is a Gothic stone church dating from the first half of the 14th century and has been protected since 1936. Its style, building material and period give it a clear place in the history of medieval architecture.
The historic steel-girder bridge in Szabda over the Drwęca represents a different period. It lies on the border with the city of Brodnica, was built in 1952, is listed under monument number A/1351, and is a remnant of the Brodnica–Ostrowite narrow-gauge railway. While the church represents Gothic religious architecture, the bridge connects a specific period of construction with the history of the narrow-gauge railway.
The Dożynki Gminne harvest festival is also part of local culture. It was first held in 2005 and was held again on a number of occasions, up to its twelfth edition. This festival tradition complements the architectural and technological history of the municipality of Brodnica.
The options offer a clear contrast: the landscape park is associated with outdoor activities, while the church and bridge illustrate architectural and technological history. The Dożynki add the history of a municipal festival to these themes. Brodnicki can therefore be viewed in terms of the balance you want between outdoor activity and cultural history.
