Churches and History in Radziejów

In 1331, Władysław Łokietek had the Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross and a Franciscan monastery built in Radziejów. The Franciscan complex retains a Gothic church portal and traces of pointed-arch windows in the south wall of the presbytery. The monastery complex is one of the few examples of its kind in the small urban centres of eastern Kuyavia. On 14 September 2014, the Franciscan church was elevated to the status of a Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

Another historic church in Radziejów is the parish church of the Assumption of Mary. It was built in 1331 at its present location, funded by Jan Grot, Bishop of Kraków. The two religious buildings represent different aspects of the town’s history: the Franciscan complex, with its surviving Gothic details and religious significance, and the parish church, with its founding date and location, which is still identified today.

Routes also link historic places. The Szlak Piastowski (Piast Trail) runs through Radziejów County. One section of the Piast Trail passes through the OPPT area and connects the battlefield site near Płowce with the religious buildings in Radziejów. The name Szlak Piastowski refers to Piast Kołodziej, considered the ancestor of the first Polish dynasty. The “Bitwy pod Płowcami” hiking trail also passes through the OPPT area and connects Radziejów with Osięciny. If you plan to take this route, it is advisable to check its current condition.

Events with Historical Connections

In June, Radziejów hosts the “Radziejowskie Sejmiki Szlacheckie” (Radziejów Noble Assemblies). They recall the Kuyavian provincial assemblies held in Radziejów from 1515 to 1793, including at the Franciscan monastery. In August, the town holds the “Jarmark Królewski” (Royal Fair), featuring demonstrations of knightly combat and an evening procession of armed retinues.

A reenactment of the Battle of Płowce is held every year in Radziejów County. The historic battle took place in the area around Radziejów on 27 September 1331 during the Polish-Teutonic War. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, it is best to check the latest dates in advance.

Lakes and Protected Areas Nearby

Lake Głuszyńskie is a glacial ribbon lake that runs north to south and is crossed by the Zgłowiączka River. Since 16 June 1983, it has been protected as the “Jezioro Głuszyńskie” landscape protection area and is also located in a noise protection zone. The lake is a habitat for numerous birds, including gulls, ducks and geese.

Lake Świeskie is also part of the “Jezioro Głuszyńskie” landscape protection area. It is a small, shallow ribbon lake with the character of a natural pond and is intensively used for fish farming. Associated with the lake is a complex of meadow and marsh vegetation known as the “Lake Świeskie channel complex.” The descriptions of the two bodies of water emphasise different features: Lake Głuszyńskie is noted for its glacial formation, river and birdlife, while Lake Świeskie is known for its shallow depth, pond-like character and use for fish farming.

Plusk Indoor Swimming Pool

Nearby, the “Plusk” indoor swimming pool is located at 58 Kościuszki Street in Radziejów, next to the Mechanical School. Its facilities include a leisure pool with geysers and water massage features, a children’s pool with an elephant slide and a water mushroom, and a 53-metre waterslide. Check current access arrangements before visiting.

The Wider Area: Radziejów County

Beyond Radziejów, Radziejów County offers more points of interest for nature and culture enthusiasts. An ornithological reserve lies on Lake Gopło, which extends across several counties. The eastern shore of Lake Gopło in Radziejów County lies in Połajewo, Przewóz, Byszewo and Połajewko. Połajewo is considered a popular recreation destination in the region. In Radziejów County, Nadgoplański Park Tysiąclecia is both a nature reserve and a landscape park.

Kujawiok is part of Radziejów County’s culinary heritage: a traditional Easter yeast cake that is among the region’s traditional foods. Together with the churches, named events and varied bodies of water, it gives a diverse picture of the region, while keeping the features of the wider county distinct from those of Radziejów itself.
