Lakes, forests and trails

Lake Chełmżyńskie is the largest lake in Toruński County. There are also lakeshores, forests and protected landscapes to explore on foot or by bicycle. Churches, castle ruins and architecture

Chełmża is home to the Gothic Church of the Holy Trinity, built between 1251 and 1359. In 1982, Pope John Paul II granted the church the title of a Minor Basilica. Chełmża is also associated with a mixed choir considered the oldest continuously performing mixed choir in Poland. The town therefore offers several distinct cultural attractions to consider when choosing places to visit.

At the mouth of the Drwęca, part of the tower and the foundations of other sections of Złotoria Castle remain. In Turzno, the Romantic Palace was built in 1866 on the site of a former manor house; it was designed by the architect Henryk Marconi. The Museum of Writing and Printing in Grębocin is housed in a former Evangelical church dating from the 13th century. These places have different historical connections: castle ruins, a designed palace and a museum in a former church building each offer a distinct focus.

Technology and leisure can also play a part in planning your trip. The Astronomical Observatory in Piwnice has Poland’s largest radio telescope, the RT-4; its dish is 32 metres in diameter. The Olender Sports and Recreation Centre has the region’s largest complex of modern indoor swimming pools. The road network is also important for getting around the county: it is well developed and makes it possible to visit even remote areas.
