From the History of the Teutonic Order to Border History
In 1292, the commander of Toruń had a mill built in Lubicz Dolny. It was the Teutonic Order’s first fortified stronghold on the Drwęca. In the 17th century, the paper mill in Lubicz Dolny supplied all the printing houses in Toruń with paper. In the 18th century, it was the largest local business. The village’s history thus spans a medieval connection to the history of the Teutonic Order and the importance of paper production for Toruń’s printing houses and for Lubicz Dolny itself.
Another historical chapter began at the end of the 19th century, when a former Prussian customs house was built in Lubicz Dolny at the border crossing over the Drwęca between Prussia and Russia. The river therefore features in different contexts in different eras: first at the fortified stronghold of 1292, and later at the border crossing.
