Dobrzejewice: Church and Places of Remembrance
Accommodation in Dobrzejewice
Dobrzejewice brings together church history and places of remembrance, along with a dated walking tour and a sports field at the school complex. The following details will help you assess the town’s cultural focus and distinguish between different activities when planning your trip.
Church of St. Lawrence: Building History and Architecture
The Church of St. Lawrence in Dobrzejewice is a single-nave brick building in the Neo-Gothic style. It was built between 1888 and 1893, replacing an older wooden church that probably dated from the 14th century and was destroyed toward the end of the 19th century. Thus, the probable origins of the earlier building sit alongside the church’s clearly defined construction period. “Single-nave” describes a layout with one main nave; together with the brick construction and Neo-Gothic style, the term gives a clear picture of the architecture. The church once had a tower, which was destroyed during the First World War.
Rococo Furnishings Inside the Church
The furnishings include an 18th-century Rococo high altar from the Cathedral of Włocławek. Its upper section features a painting of St. Lawrence from the late 18th century, with embossed silver fittings. Two Rococo side altars from the second half of the 18th century are dedicated to St. Anthony and St. Anne. A Rococo pulpit and a Rococo baptismal font complete the furnishings. The shared style connects the altar, pulpit, and baptismal font, while the dedications and the painting of St. Lawrence give individual pieces their own associations. If you would like to see these furnishings inside the church, check in advance whether a visit is possible.
The Former Cholera Cemetery
The former cholera cemetery was beside a forest; the graves had no headstones. A statue of St. Tekla was returned to its former location after almost 80 years. A memorial cross with two crossbars, a karawaka, was also erected there. Alongside the church’s history, the former cemetery and its memorials are therefore also a focus. The almost 80 years before the statue’s return represent a different historical timespan from the church’s construction period: here, the story is one of a long interruption, while the church’s history involves construction phases and the age of individual furnishings.
