Chełmno lies on the Vistula River, on nine hills of the Chełmno Upland. City Walls and Old Town History
The almost completely preserved city walls of Chełmno form a 2,270-meter circuit. The walls included 25 or 27 towers; 17 are fully preserved and six in fragments. The length of the circuit gives you a concrete reference point for planning a city tour. In 2005, the Old Town was included on the Polish list of historic monuments maintained by the President of the Republic of Poland.
Another way to explore the Old Town is the “Serce miasta zakochanych” geocaching route. It leads through Chełmno’s Old Town and lets visitors discover former meeting places. Museum and Church
The Muzeum Ziemi Chełmińskiej is located in the town hall at Rynek 28, 86-200 Chełmno. Its permanent exhibitions focus on the history of Chełmno and the Polish surgeon Ludwik Rydygier. The museum organizes temporary exhibitions in the Sala Mieszczańska on the second floor. The Baszta Prochowa currently houses the permanent exhibition “Z pradziejów Chełmna i okolic” and a small ethnographic exhibition.
The Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary houses a relic of Saint Valentine. You can visit the church free of charge every day through the entrance on ul. Franciszkańska: until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and until 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. At 60 meters, the northwest tower is the highest viewpoint in Chełmno. The “Na Bramce” chapel was built above a gate around 1620 and is associated with the veneration of Our Lady of Chełmno.
Annual Traditions and Walks
Walentynki Chełmińskie takes place every year in Chełmno. For the occasion, local bakers and confectioners prepare heart-shaped pastries and the famous Valentine rolls with lovage. The event also includes the Jarmark św. Walentego, where local producers and craftspeople offer handicrafts, souvenirs and regional specialties. If you are interested in local traditions and regional products, these events give the trip a distinctive cultural focus.
The Planty are also worth considering for a walk around the city: they are a popular place for walks among Chełmno residents. The combination of the city wall circuit, the Old Town route and the Planty offers several different ways to spend time in the city. The Wider Travel Area
You can also take mobility into account when planning: official public transport information lists a bus connection from Świecie via Chełmno and Chełmża to Toruń. The Starogard Lake, in the Lower Vistula Valley, is also in the wider travel area. It consists of two bodies of water with a total area of 27.3 hectares and serves as a recreational destination for residents of Chełmno and the surrounding area, as well as for tourists. This allows you to consider whether Chełmno’s city history should be the main focus of your trip or whether you would also like to include destinations in the wider area.
