Kowalewo: Cycling Routes, Natural Monuments and Local History

Kowalewo brings together two clear themes for trip planning: cycling and exploring specific natural and commemorative sites. The “LEŚNA PRZYGODA” route passes through the village; the 30-kilometre “Wodna” route also includes Kowalewo. Cycling: two routes, different details

For cycling travellers, the two routes answer different planning questions. “LEŚNA PRZYGODA” passes through Kowalewo; the return journey from Kowalewo to Szubin uses a cycle path. Check the surface and signage on site. The “Wodna” route is 30 km long and also passes through Kowalewo. The first route is described by its course and a specific section of the return journey, while the second is specified by its length. The 30 km of the Wodna route should therefore not be equated with the described return section to Szubin. When comparing routes, keep these details separate: they help with planning, but do not answer the same question.

Two natural monuments with distinct characteristics

The natural monuments can also be readily distinguished by their characteristics. The pedunculate oak (Quercus robur), with a trunk circumference of 470 cm, stands on the grounds of an agricultural business. The small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata), on the school grounds, has a trunk circumference of 306 cm. A municipal resolution dated 29 May 2024 designates both trees as natural monuments. The oak’s circumference is 164 cm greater than the lime’s; their species and locations provide a second point of comparison. Both factors matter: the trees’ size and their locations on the grounds of an agricultural business and on the school grounds, respectively.

Cemetery and memorial stone

The Protestant cemetery in Kowalewo dates from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and covers 0.28 hectares. That is equivalent to 2,800 square metres and gives you a concrete sense of the site’s size. The cemetery is in the centre of the village, behind the school grounds. It contains a memorial stone with a plaque. The stone stands right by the road, is surrounded by a metal fence and is listed in the register of national memorial sites of the town and municipality of Szubin. The cemetery’s historical period and the memorial stone’s entry in the register offer two different ways to explore local history: the historic site and a specific commemorative marker.
