Maksymilianowo: Hiking Trails and History

Maksymilianowo can be explored through its routes and specific historical landmarks. When choosing a destination in Poland, two questions naturally come to mind: would you like to include hiking or cycling routes in your plans, and are you interested in the town’s history as well as its trails? Named routes, a memorial plaque, a railway station and a chapel make these themes tangible. A natural monument and the importance of the rail network add to the town’s profile.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Route

The route of the black “Białego węgla” hiking trail, described in 2009, starts in Maksymilianowo and runs via Samociążek to Koronowo. Also described in 2009 is the red hiking trail of the Klubu Turystów Pieszych “Talk”, whose junction is in Maksymilianowo; it runs via Bydgoszcz Fordon, Osielsko, Bydgoszcz Opławiec and Gościeradz. The two routes offer different points of reference: the black trail leads to Koronowo, while the red trail connects Maksymilianowo with several other places.

Another option for planning your trip is the approximately 37 km-long “Przyjazna – Osielsko” cycling route, created by the N-Bike Academy team. Described in 2011, the route runs via Niemcz, Osielsko, Jarużyn, Jastrzębie, Żołędowo, Bożenkowo and Maksymilianowo before returning to Niemcz. In addition to its approximate total length, its route through several places is also specified.

Memorial Sites and Listed Buildings

From 27 to 30 January 1945, during preparations to break through the Pomeranian Wall, the command post of the Polish Army commander, Major General Stanisław Popławski, was located in Maksymilianowo. A memorial plaque on a building on Główna Street commemorates this command post and links the place to a precisely specified period in history.

The chapel on Główna Street is among the properties listed in the municipality’s register of monuments. Maksymilianowo railway station at Dworcowa 13 is also listed; it dates from the 1920s and is included in the Osielsko municipality’s register of monuments. The memorial plaque, chapel and railway station offer different points of connection for exploring the town’s history: one recalls an event from 1945, while the two buildings add a perspective on its architectural heritage.

Natural Monument and Railway Network

A common horse chestnut stands by the roadside at the intersection of Szkolna Street and Koronowska Street and is designated a natural monument. Its trunk circumference is 360 cm at breast height. Alongside the historic and listed buildings, this adds a distinct natural landmark that can be located precisely at a named street intersection.

Railways are also part of the town’s transport geography. A 2025 modernisation notice names Maksymilianowo as the junction of railway lines 201 (Nowa Wieś Wielka–Gdynia Port) and 131 (Chorzów Batory–Tczew), which are important for freight traffic. This freight connection adds another perspective on Maksymilianowo to the themes of routes and history.
