Tymień

Tymień brings together a founding story in the Kuyavian Lake District, archaeological connections, memorials in the village and natural areas in the wider surroundings. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these aspects distinct: some of the historical evidence relates directly to Tymień, while the lakes and the museum exhibition broaden the perspective to include the region.

History and heritage in the village

Tymień was founded in 1770 during German settlement in the Kuyavian Lake District. This founding places the village within the region’s settlement history. Other historical evidence belongs to different periods and contexts: it ranges from chamberless burial mounds of the Funnel Beaker culture to a 14th-century knight’s sword, as well as more recent religious and local memorials.

Tymień is home to an Evangelical cemetery dating from the late 19th century, which is listed in the register of monuments. There is also a wayside figure of the Virgin Mary in the village, dating from the second half of the 20th century. The cemetery and the wayside figure thus offer two distinct, historically dated points of interest for travellers interested in religious and local history.

Five chamberless burial mounds of the Funnel Beaker culture are associated with Tymień; their exact location is unknown. Finds associated with the mounds included numerous pottery fragments, a polished stone, a flint axe and a flint flake. This group of finds adds archaeological evidence to the village’s history. In the case of the burial mounds, the focus is on their cultural attribution and the objects discovered, rather than on a specific, precisely located place to visit.

A find from Tymień in a museum

A 14th-century knight’s sword was found in the village of Tymień near Izbica Kujawska and donated to the Muzeum Ziemi Kujawskiej i Dobrzyńskiej. The museum’s exhibition “Dzieje Włocławka i regionu od pradziejów do PRL” includes the find; the sword was exhibited at the Muzeum Historii Włocławka, ul. Szpichlerna 19. This connects the history of the find with a museum exhibition on the past of Włocławek and the region, without conflating the findspot with the place where it is exhibited.

Lakes and nature conservation in the wider area

The natural features, too, extend beyond Tymień. Jezioro Modzerowskie and Jezioro Długie are ribbon lakes. Together with neighbouring Jezioro Brdowskie, which is in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, they form the headwaters of the Noteć. These bodies of water place the natural landscape in a broader regional context.

The Jezioro Modzerowskie Protected Landscape Area is one of the forms of nature protection listed for Tymień. As of 30 June 2017, two forms of nature protection were recorded for Tymień. This date is important for context; at the same time, the name Jezioro Modzerowskie provides a specific link to the region’s lakes. A trip to Tymień thus offers both local historical heritage and broader cultural and natural themes.
