Mstów: Manor House History and Local Legend

Mstów lies by the Tarnawka stream in the central part of Jodłownik municipality, a few kilometres north of Jodłownik. The earliest known mention of Mstów dates from 1408 and is held in the archives of Szczyrzyc Abbey. In 1505, Mstów belonged to Joanesa, a benefactor of the Cistercian monastery in Szczyrzyc, where he was also buried. Towards the end of the 16th century, Mstów came under the rule of Stanisław Zborowski of the Jastrzębiec coat-of-arms clan. A few decades later, the village passed into the ownership of the Gąsiorowski family of the Pilawa coat-of-arms clan. In the 19th century, the Popiel family took over the estate and manor house in Mstów. Jastrzębiec and Pilawa are the names of the heraldic clans to which Zborowski and Gąsiorowski belonged. They refer to heraldic associations, not to other places; this explains why these names appear alongside the family names in the history of Mstów.

Manor House Park and Wayside Chapel

The manor house park in Mstów was entered in the monuments register under number A-525 on 23 August 1988. A decision dated 1 September 2015 removed part of the park and part of the visual buffer zone from the register. The two steps therefore do not concern the same extent: the later removal affected only parts of the site. Near the former manor house stands a wayside chapel with a figure of Chrystus Frasobliwy.

A Local Legend

A local legend tells how a snake charmer died while luring snakes out of the manor house. The lord of the manor is said to have built a chapel on the spot as a result.
