Limanowa: Culture, Cycling History and Beskid Wyspowy

Limanowa lies in a small hollow surrounded by the mountains of the Beskid Wyspowy. The town combines a striking landscape with cultural sites, memorials and opportunities for active days out.

Cultural sites and history in Limanowa

The Regional Museum of the Limanowa area is housed in the historic manor house of the Mars family. The combination of museum and manor house gives your cultural itinerary a specific location in the town. Another landmark is the Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows. It commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Constitution of 3 May. Right next to the basilica is Limanowa’s small Calvary complex, with a monumental altar, a Church of the Holy Sepulchre and Stations of the Cross.

The region’s history is also visible at the memorial sites on Jabłoniec. The cemetery complex there includes military cemeteries dating from 1914 to 1945. The war cemetery on Jabłoniec includes a grenade-shaped mausoleum and the graves of 161 Austro-Hungarian, one German and 247 Russian soldiers.

In Łososina Górna, the Church of All Saints preserves two works of art that can be dated: a Gothic stone baptismal font from 1535 and the bronze bell “Saint Andrew” from 1520. Alongside the memorial sites and the basilica, this church interior, with objects from different centuries, offers another cultural theme to explore.

Town park and cycling

Limanowa’s town park is located by the Jabłoniecki stream. Its facilities and areas include a pump track, a dog park, fitness equipment, a picnic lawn and a campsite. The cycling skills centre in Limanowa complements this offering: it includes 1,191 square metres of paved tracks and cycle paths.

A route of about 25 kilometres is described for a longer cycling trip, starting and ending in Limanowa. It passes through Jabłoniec and Golców and visits two military cemeteries. The wider Limanowa County also has 36 hiking trails. Some of them can also be used for cycling, horse riding or cross-country skiing after appropriate adaptation; this option does not apply to all trails.

More viewpoints in the Beskid Wyspowy

In the wider region, Mogielica is the highest peak in the Beskid Wyspowy. The “Mogielica” nature reserve and a 22-metre-high observation tower are located near the summit. The Wooden Architecture Route runs through the Beskid villages of the Limanowa area and includes historic churches and manor houses set in the landscape.

Another regional attraction is in Szczawa: the mineral water pump room draws highly mineralised bicarbonate-chloride-sodium waters from the three springs “Szczawa I”, “Hanna” and “Dziedzilla”.
