A good introduction to the city’s history is the walking route that starts at the town hall in Nowy Sącz’s market square. It passes the Basilica of St Margaret and runs alongside the remains of the city walls.
The Dom Gotycki offers a different perspective: today, the building houses the Muzeum Okręgowe w Nowym Sączu.
Wooden architecture and regional folk culture
The Sądecki Ethnographic Park showcases wooden architecture and the traditional folk culture of several local ethnographic groups: the Lachs, Pogórzans and Górale Sądeckie. The cultural range on display also includes the Lemkos, Germans and Roma. The park thus offers a glimpse of the diversity of regional traditions, rather than reducing the area’s culture to a single group or architectural style.
In Galician Town, you can see a reconstruction of a small-town building complex. It includes a small market square and a row of around a dozen houses. The complex features a photography studio, a watchmaker’s workshop and a pottery workshop.
The Sądecki Ethnographic Park regularly and occasionally hosts demonstrations of traditional rural crafts, workshops in regional handicrafts and presentations of regional cuisine. If you are interested in craft traditions, the program offers practical and culinary themes alongside the exhibits.
City walks with different themes
In addition to the route starting at the town hall, there are several walks, each with its own theme. The Nowy Sącz Ice Cream Trail is a walking route that lets you explore the city while sampling its ice cream specialties. Another city walk follows the Nowy Sącz graffiti and street art trail. These two routes have a different focus from the one covering the basilica and city walls: one centers on ice cream specialties, the other on graffiti and street art.
In Nowy Sącz, the Ecumenical Pilgrim Route passes through places that are important to Poles, Jews, Roma, Germans and Lemkos.
A nature attraction in the Dąbrówka district
A natural beaver habitat lies in a forest in the Dąbrówka district. It is considered a subject for photographs in different seasons.
