Discover Niedzica: Castle, Water and Spisz Culture

Niedzica in Poland combines castle history and regional culture with activities on the water and longer cycling and horse-riding routes. The experiences that interest you can help shape your stay: the castle complex focuses on the culture of the Spisz region, the Zamajerz marina offers boats and excursions, and the routes provide active days in the surrounding area.

Castle, dam and activities on the water

The excursion boats Biała Dama, Harnaś and Dunajec moor directly below the castle in Niedzica. The Zamajerz marina near Niedzica-Zamek rents kayaks and pedal boats, offers moorings, and hires out yachts and rowing boats for charter trips. One of its special attractions is also the Pumpabike: a hydrofoil craft on Jezioro Czorsztyńskie. If you are interested in different ways to get out on the water, Niedzica offers both boating and excursions.

From Polana Sosny, kayaking routes head upstream on the Dunajec and along the Białka between Jurgów and Czarna Góra. The dam in Niedzica is Poland’s highest earth dam with a central clay core. It is 56 metres high and 404 metres long. These engineering structures therefore add a distinct sightseeing and interest point to the water activities.

Spisz culture and regional traditions

The castle museum complex includes the wooden Spichlerz, dating from the 18th century and located about 150 metres from the castle. It houses an ethnographic exhibition on the culture of the Spisz region. The Spichlerz is open daily from 1 May to 30 September, from 9:00 to 17:00, and is closed outside this season. Take these opening hours into account if the exhibition is an important part of your stay.

The Bacówka Edukacyjna, built in 2019, is a small centre for environmental and cultural education. It presents the history and culture of pastoral farming. Visitors can see authentic equipment used in pastoral farming and to make regional products such as Oscypek and Bundz. The Wozownia in Niedzica-Zamek displays historic horse-drawn vehicles from 1900 to 1939, including carriages and sleighs.

The Miniature Park in Niedzica-Zamek presents notable buildings of the Podtatra region at a scale of 1:20. The models include the castles of Dunajec, Lubowla, Orawa, Czorsztyn and Pieniny, the Red Monastery, the church in Dębno, and the manor houses of the Tetmajer and Uznański families. Cycling and horse-riding routes around Niedzica

Cyclists can choose from several loops of different lengths. The approximately 40-kilometre loop over the ridge of the Pieniny Spiskie starts and ends in Niedzica. It follows paved roads, is suitable for any bicycle and takes about four to five hours. Another loop, along the Dunajec Gorge, is about 38 kilometres long: from Niedzica it goes via the Red Monastery in Slovakia, Szczawnica, Krościenko, Grywałd, Krośnica and Czorsztyn before returning to Niedzica.

The 48-kilometre Mała Pętla Zamagurza cycling loop also starts and ends in Niedzica. Its stops include Kacwin, Wielka Frankowa, Osturnia, the Zdziarska-Przełęź, Jurgów, Rzepiska, Łapszanka and Łapsze Niżne. For planning your day, the main point of comparison is the stated route length; the three loops cover different distances and each has its own sequence of places.

Horse-riding routes are also described: the 15-kilometre route from Frydman to Niedzica passes through Siodło, the Drożyska Valley, the Baniska clearings, 725-metre-high Barwinkowa Góra, Cisówka and Tabor, ending at the castle. The 11-kilometre horse-riding route from Niedzica to Kacwin goes through the centre of Niedzica, past the lower lift station at Polana Sosny and the Chapel of St Rozalia, and on to the Kacwin–Wielka Frankowa border crossing. There is also a cross-country ski trail at the sports field in Niedzica on Św. Rozalii Street.
