The Dunajec and the Mountain Landscape

In Tylmanowa, the Dunajec cuts through the landscape, forming two narrow sections of the valley below Kłodne and Wietrznica. The river shapes not only the landscape; the narrowing sections of the valley are also part of the character of the area. If you look for distinctive landforms when choosing a destination, this contrast between the river and the narrow valleys is a useful point of reference.

The natural area includes the part of Popradzki Landscape Park located within Tylmanowa. It covers the eastern slopes of Pasmo Radziejowej above the cultivated fields. The yellow hiking trail along Pasmo Radziejowej is recommended as a way to experience the park’s natural environment. The eastern slopes of Pasmo Radziejowej thus add another aspect of the natural area to the view of the river valley.

When planning your walks, you can distinguish this trail from Hiking Route 5, which passes through the settlements of Króle and Klępy, while the yellow trail is recommended for experiencing the park’s natural environment. The two descriptions therefore appeal to different interests: a route through named settlements or a hike connected with the landscape park. Conditions on Hiking Route 5 may change; check them before setting out.

History in Buildings and Settlements

A foundation charter from 1336 documents Tylmanowa’s settlement history. Among its older buildings is St. Nicholas Church, built between 1757 and 1760. The Neoclassical Berski Manor dates from 1840; remains of its park have been preserved. Together with the historic settlement complexes, these places represent different chapters in the local history of architecture.

The Berski Manor is currently not open to visitors and can only be viewed from the outside. If you are interested in what it looked like in the past, you can see photographs of the house and its interiors in the “Tylmanowskie Wspomnienia” exhibition at the Wiejski Ośrodek Kultury in Tylmanowa. Confirm that the exhibition is available before visiting.

Historic complexes of wooden buildings have been preserved on the eastern bank of the Dunajec, including in the settlements of Króle and Klępy. They form a settlement landscape dating from the second half of the 18th century. Króle is also home to a more than 150-year-old farmstead in its original condition. The complex includes a house, granary, stable, and barn. The farmstead is privately owned and not open to visitors; it can only be viewed from the outside.

The history of the September Campaign of 1939 is also present in the landscape: clearly visible remains of Polish trenches have been preserved in the forest on Wietrznice Hill above the settlement of Rzeki. Kalwaria Tylmanowska was established on Basta Hill in the 1980s. These different places give Tylmanowa’s history a tangible connection to its settlements, hills, and paths.

In the town center, a footbridge over the Dunajec leads to the settlements of Wybrańce and Górzany. Engineer Stuczek designed it in 1979; it was built to thank the people of Tylmanowa for helping him hide during the occupation. A binduga, a place where logs were tied together and floated downstream, was also located on the Dunajec near Króle. It operated for several centuries. The bridge and the binduga thus point to different historical connections with the river.
