Historic Town Centre and Architectural Styles
The rectangular market square in Czarny Dunajec and its side streets were laid out in the second half of the 19th century. It took on its final form during the interwar period, when the town held municipal rights. The two dates distinguish the creation of the square from its subsequent final design. The so-called dworki czarnodunajeckie are one-storey brick houses with a porch supported by pillars. Only a few of these houses remain today. The pillar-supported porch and single-storey design provide specific architectural features that help describe this local house style. The Church of the Holy Trinity is also located in Czarny Dunajec.
The Community’s Jewish History
The Jewish cemetery in Czarny Dunajec was established in the second half of the 19th century. In 2020, the Popielów „Centrum” Family Foundation renovated it as part of the “Ludzie, nie liczby” project. The synagogue building at 10 Sienkiewicza Street dates from the early 20th century and is one of the few surviving tangible traces of the coexistence of different cultures in the community. The community describes restoration and adaptation work on the building as an ongoing project. The market square and dworki draw attention to the townscape and architectural style, while the cemetery and synagogue building relate to Jewish history and the coexistence of different cultures in the community.
Cycling and Ice Skating
The paved main section of the cross-border Szlak wokół Tatr cycling route is 20.6 kilometres long. It passes through Ludźmierz, Rogoźnik, Stare Bystre, Czarny Dunajec and Podczerwone. This gives you both the distance and the places along this section for planning your route. Check local conditions before setting off. The former historic railway station now serves as a service point for cyclists on the cross-border Szlak wokół Tatr; in 2026, the community reported that its renovation had been completed.
Another activity based in the town is the indoor ice rink in Czarny Dunajec. It is open to the public; check the latest operating information before your visit. The rink measures 20 × 40 metres within the boards and is designed for up to 70 people at a time. Skate rental and sharpening services are available. The rental service has 150 pairs of skates and 30 protective helmets; as the stock may change, confirm availability with the ice rink in advance.
