Market Square and the Town’s History

The market square sits on a steep hill that slopes down towards the Biała Valley to the east and north. The town was founded and its layout established in 1340. The town hall on the square was built in 1873–1874. The central location thus brings together two historical milestones: the town’s medieval layout and a town hall dating from the 19th century. The hilltop setting also makes the market square’s topography part of the townscape.

Museums and Collections

The Muzeum Miejskie w Tuchowie is housed in the restored cellars of the cultural centre. Its themed rooms display more than 3,000 exhibits, including mementos from the First and Second World Wars, ethnographic collections, documents and photographs. The ethnographic museum at the Tuchów shrine focuses on a different subject. Its collections include items from former apiaries, flax-processing equipment, historic agricultural tools, oil lamps, jewellery and other objects from rural life. The town’s artistic heritage includes the Tuchów Triptych, also known as the “Holy Conversation from Tuchów.” It was created in the third quarter of the 15th century and comes from St James’s Church in Tuchów. The collections range from everyday objects and crafts to a work of late medieval art.

The Shrine and Pilgrimage Dates

The Marian shrine in Tuchów attracts pilgrims throughout the year. Key dates are 1–9 July, when the major indulgence feast is held, and 8 September, the date of the minor indulgence feast. The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is another cultural landmark. Beneath its open-air altar are a screening room and other spaces. These house a moving Christmas crib that operates year-round, as well as missionary and ethnographic museums. The monastery and shrine have also been home to a Redemptorist missionary museum since 1975. The crib and museums add a distinctive cultural dimension to a visit to the shrine, alongside its pilgrimage tradition.

Hiking Trails and Art in the Townscape

One blue-marked hiking trail is 8.5 kilometres long. It runs from the area around Trzemeska Góra through the Tuchów Forest to the centre of Tuchów. A second blue-marked trail is 8.6 kilometres long and runs from Tuchów through Kielanowice and Bistuszowa Podlesie to Brzanka.

At 8.5 and 8.6 kilometres, the two trails are almost the same length; their routes and endpoints distinguish them more than their distances do. The first leads to the centre, while the second starts in Tuchów and passes through several named places on its way to Brzanka. Check the route information before setting out so you can choose the trail that best suits you.

Another way to explore the town is the “Tuchowski szlak rzeźb, pomników i miejsc które warto zobaczyć” (Tuchów trail of sculptures, monuments and places worth seeing). The sculptures along the trail reflect Tuchów’s history and traditional crafts. Together with the hiking trails, it offers an artistic and historical perspective on the town, while the museums provide insights into collections and historic objects.
