Tarnów between Renaissance and wine traditions

Tarnów combines a cityscape shaped by the Renaissance with museums, green spaces, and a distinctive regional wine and culinary culture. The Old Town is shaped by the Renaissance. The market square is lined mainly with two-storey townhouses whose architecture reflects a range of styles. The wooden Church of Matki Bożej Szkaplerznej, consecrated in 1440, is also near the market square. The Cathedral Basilica preserves Renaissance tombs of the Tarnowski family and a Mannerist tomb of the Ostrogski family.

An unusual way to explore the city is the Szlak Maszkaronów. Created in spring 2024, it links 20 mascaron figures, each about 30 centimetres high, placed at important locations around Tarnów. Strzelecki Park also offers something distinctive: its irregularly laid-out English-style garden has a pond. In the pond stands the Mausoleum of General J. Bem, a sarcophagus on six columns with Corinthian capitals.

The Bima is the only surviving fragment of Tarnów’s oldest synagogue, dating from the 17th century. Cultural events are held here every year. Stary Cmentarz, also known as Zabłocki Cemetery, has existed for more than 200 years and was entered in the register of historic monuments in 1957. At the main railway station, the Panorama Gallery displays fragments of the panorama held by the museum.

The Ethnographic Museum in Tarnów has a permanent exhibition on Roma history and culture; its exhibits include original horse-drawn wagons. At the Diocesan Museum, founded in 1888, visitors can explore the history of church museums: it is considered Poland’s oldest church museum. Covering 9.5 hectares, this partial forest reserve protects a relatively little-altered linden and oak forest. For a different kind of park landscape, Strzelecki Park and its pond offer an alternative to the woodland reserve.

A blue hiking trail runs through Skamieniałe Miasto Nature Reserve. This protected area, with its unusual rock formations, can be visited year-round, preferably at a time arranged in advance. In Ciężkowice, there is a spa park and a multimedia natural history museum, as well as other visitor attractions.

Cyclists can also consider the route of EuroVelo 4 (EV4, VeloMetropolis): its 92-kilometre section runs from Wola Batorska through Tarnów to Jodłówka Wałki. The distance given is the length of the section, not a journey time or difficulty rating.
