Discover Brzegi

Brzegi is located near Wieliczka; Campus Misericordiae is a prominent landmark. The site covers more than 200 hectares and gives the place a distinctive character. The campus and local traditions

On 29 July 2018, a writers’ meeting was held at Campus Misericordiae Wieliczka–Brzegi. The occasion was the launch of the new publication „Miasto spotkań pod Wieliczką“ by Wydawnictwa Żyznowski.

Another sign of local culture is the cross at the Światowych Dni Młodzieży roundabout in Brzegi. It is a contemporary sculpture that continues a centuries-old tradition. Particularly many roadside chapels can be found in Brzegi and on the Pola Miłosierdzia, where new chapels are still being built. The cross and the chapels thus represent different expressions of a tradition: a contemporary sculpture and a practice of chapel building that continues to this day.

In the wider destination of Wieliczka: architecture and history

Wieliczka adds a broad range of architectural and cultural history to the picture of Brzegi. The wooden Church of St Sebastian in Wieliczka was built in 1582 and contains Renaissance paintings. The parish Church of St Clement was built in 1381 with a foundation from the townspeople; architectural elements from the 13th and 14th centuries have been preserved inside. In Grabie, the parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary dates from 1742. Its notable furnishings include a Gothic stone baptismal font from the 15th century.

The Franciscan church and monastery in Wieliczka also offer a distinctive historical connection: the complex was built in the first half of the 17th century and was the first stone church in the Reformed Franciscan Province of Lesser Poland. The Jewish historic cemetery in Wieliczka dates from the 18th century. In Siercza, the Ursuline convent is housed in a former Lubomirski palace dating from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In Raciborsko, remains of a former manor farm complex have been preserved, including a granary. In Wieliczka, Siercza and Raciborsko, the range of historic buildings and sites spans from the 17th century to around the turn of the 20th century.

Mining, routes and active excursions

The wider destination of Wieliczka’s mining history includes the underground Miners’ Route. It passes through 7 to 14 extraction chambers in the rugged mine workings around the oldest surviving Regis Shaft and is up to 2 kilometres long. The wider destination of Wieliczka also includes the Wieliczka Salt Mine, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site „Royal Salt Mines of Wieliczka and Bochnia“.

For activities above ground, the wider destination of Wieliczka offers a variety of routes. The yellow trail is a walking and cycling route between Wieliczka and Dobczyce. The red cycling trail forms a 27-kilometre loop through Wieliczka and Siercza. The yellow trail is therefore described as suitable for walking and cycling, while the red trail is specifically designed as a cycling loop. Siercza also has a riding stable offering horse riding under the guidance of an instructor; check availability in advance.

On 8 September 2026, Zamek Żupny and its courtyard will be closed for renovation work, which is expected to continue until the end of 2028. If you are planning a visit, check the latest information in advance. When choosing a theme, it is useful to make a clear distinction: here, Brzegi is associated with the campus, the cross and the roadside chapels, while Wieliczka is associated with mining history, historic buildings and the routes described.
