Wieliczka brings together the history of salt production, historic churches and routes through the surrounding area. The Wieliczka Salt Mine is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines.” This gives you several themes to consider when planning your trip: underground mining history, culture in Wieliczka, and excursions on foot or by bicycle.
Salt mining and Zamek Żupny
The underground Miners’ Route includes seven to 14 mining chambers in the rugged workings around the oldest preserved Regis Shaft. It is up to two kilometers long. Those interested in the history of salt production can also find historical points of reference at Zamek Żupny: an archaeological exhibition traces the development of salt production from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Another exhibition features a collection of about 1,000 objects.
As of September 8, 2026, both were closed for renovation work, which was expected to continue until the end of 2028.
Churches and historical landmarks
Several buildings in Wieliczka represent different eras. The wooden Church of St. Sebastian was built in 1582 and contains Renaissance paintings. The parish Church of St. Clement was founded in 1381 through a donation by the townspeople; architectural elements from the 13th and 14th centuries have been preserved inside. The Franciscan church and monastery are also part of the town’s history: built in the first half of the 17th century, they were the first stone church of the Lesser Poland Reformers Province. The Jewish historic cemetery in Wieliczka dates from the 18th century.
Nearby places add to the picture, too. In Grabie, the parish Church of the Assumption of Mary dates from 1742 and also contains a Gothic stone baptismal font from the 15th century. In Siercza, the Ursuline convent is housed in a former Lubomirski palace dating from around the turn of the 20th century. In Raciborsko, the remains of a former manor complex have been preserved, including a granary. These places offer different historical perspectives rather than simply repeating Wieliczka’s salt history.
Cycling routes, hiking and activities
Two routes with clearly distinct courses are described for active days. The yellow route is a hiking and cycling route between Wieliczka and Dobczyce. The red cycling route, by contrast, forms a 27-kilometer loop through Wieliczka and Siercza. If you prefer a route between two places to a circular route when planning, this distinction can help guide you. The “Las i stawy na Grabówkach” ecological protected area is also located along the hiking and cycling route from Wieliczka.
Siercza also has a riding stable that offers horseback riding under the guidance of a riding instructor. So, alongside cycling and hiking, cultural sights and horseback riding are different options to consider when planning your trip. Regional buses connect Wieliczka with Kraków.
