Discover Koźmice Wielkie
Accommodation in Koźmice Wielkie
Get to know Koźmice Wielkie through three distinct features: the landscape along the Wilga River, a forest that partly lies within the village, and historical landmarks at specific locations. Together, they give your travel plans more character than a single excursion focus. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these features can help you decide whether to combine your stay mainly with nature watching, local history or a broader range of excursions in the wider Wieliczka destination.
The Wilga Valley and Czarny Las
The Wilga flows through the northern part of Koźmice Wielkie, from southeast to northwest. There, it shapes a broad valley characterised by meadows. This landscape offers a different view of the village from the wooded slopes: the river and the open meadow valley each shape the surrounding scenery in their own way.
Part of Czarny Las lies within Koźmice Wielkie. The forest grows on steep slopes that are unsuitable for farming. Oak and beech make up most of the woodland, with smaller numbers of spruce and pine. Blackberries, raspberries, wild strawberries and mushrooms, among other things, grow among the trees. Mushrooms are particularly popular with foragers. If you are interested in the natural composition of a place, you will find clear differences here between the wooded slope and the meadow valley, without reducing both landscape types to a single backdrop.
A chapel, a statue and remembrance
A chapel dating from the first half of the 19th century stands on the boundary between Koźmice Wielkie and Siercza. It was remodelled towards the end of the same century and is still considered a symbol of the local population’s faith. Its location on the boundary between the two villages and its long history make it a distinctive landmark in local history.
Another historical statue stands near the Wilga, at the junction of the Wieliczka–Myślenice road and the road to Janowice. Made entirely of stone, it depicts Saint John of Nepomuk and dates from 1827. Jan Holewa is named as its benefactor. Its location, material, date and benefactor combine to form a precise, locally rooted memorial.
More recent history is also present in the village: on 2 May 2013, a monument was unveiled in Koźmice Wielkie commemorating the partisans of the “Sosna-Las” ZWZ-AK unit. They fought against German troops from 1940 to 1945. The chapel, statue and monument thus represent different periods and forms of remembrance.
Cycling route and travel planning
One important distinction is useful when planning a cycling route: the 23-kilometre cycling trail through the Pogórze Wielickie passes through Koźmice Małe, among other places. Koźmice Wielkie is not mentioned in the listed route sequence. You should therefore not assume that the similarly named villages are connected by a route through Koźmice Wielkie.
The wider Wieliczka destination offers additional themes of a different kind. The Wieliczka Salt Mine is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines”. The Miners’ Route passes through seven to fourteen mining chambers around the oldest preserved Regis shaft and is up to two kilometres long. In addition, the yellow hiking and cycling trail connects Wieliczka with Dobczyce, while the red cycling route forms a 27-kilometre loop through Wieliczka and Siercza. You can therefore consider the local features of Koźmice Wielkie and the attractions of the wider Wieliczka destination as separate elements of your trip. Conditions on the routes may change.
