Museum and fortified castle
The Łęczyca Museum is housed in a 14th-century fortified castle. The castle was built during the reign of King Casimir the Great. One of the museum’s special focuses is its collection of demonic sculptures: assembled since the mid-1950s, it comprises more than 400 exhibits. Almost 200 of them are on display. The museum offers a tangible introduction to an unusual collection and adds a distinct cultural theme alongside the history of the fortified castle.
The town’s history is also reflected in buildings that have served different purposes. A surviving defensive tower on Kościelna Street was converted into the bell tower of St Andrew’s Church in the 18th century. The Norbertine monastery and Norbertine church were built onto the town walls in 1603. These dates place two architectural developments in context: the tower’s conversion and the connection between the monastery and church and the fortifications.
Łęczyca’s medieval street network was laid out when the town was founded in the 13th century and has survived to this day. Railway station and hiking trail
Łęczyca has a railway station on line 16, which connects, among other places, Kutno, Łęczyca and Łódź Kaliska. For train travellers, this provides a connection that places Łęczyca on a rail route serving several of the named stations. For a walk, the 8 km green Łęczyca–Tum hiking trail starts at the station. It passes the reservoir and Staromiejska Street on its way to Tum and Kwiatkówek. The trail’s length gives you a specific reference point for planning your day, and the route connects several named places and waypoints.
City park and seasonal activities
The city park offers walks in green surroundings and has a working graduation tower. There is also a playground and a skate plaza in the park. This means you can choose between different activities there: spending time outdoors, visiting the playground or using the skate plaza.
During the summer holidays, kayaks and pedal boats were available to borrow free of charge at Zalew Miejski, the city reservoir. The programme announced for the 26th Łęczyca International Jousting Tournament included staged battles, an equestrian tournament, archery demonstrations, historic crafts and medieval market stalls. The tournament programme described therefore included demonstrations, crafts and market activity; boat hire was available during the summer holidays.
Visitor information
The Łęczyca Tourist Information Centre provides information about local attractions, opening hours for museums and cultural institutions, transport links and tour guides. For the museum, the opening hours given for the tourist season, from 1 April to 31 October, are 10:00 to 17:00 Tuesday to Friday, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
