Zelów: Czech Heritage and Historic Routes

Zelów combines a distinctive Czech history with visible traces in the townscape. The first Czech families arrived here in 1803; Zelów has the largest concentration of the Czech national minority in Poland. The church, cemetery, museum and historic routes tell different stories of this heritage. There are also memorial sites and a concert traditionally held on Easter Monday.
Czech Heritage in the Townscape
One specific architectural detail can be seen in the houses of former weavers in Zelów: their attic space projects one metre beyond the building’s main structure. This means you can encounter the history of weaving in the architecture, too. The Evangelical Reformed Church is a central landmark in the town’s history. Built between 1821 and 1825 to a design by architect Zille, it is Neoclassical in style and considered the first monumental building in Zelów.
The church contains Czech inscriptions and commemorative plaques honouring Jan Hus and Jan Kalwin. The neighbouring cemetery complements this historic site: gravestones and monuments also bear Czech inscriptions, including the graves of some of Zelów’s founders. Another plaque commemorates the site of a penal camp and the Nazi occupation. A separate plaque commemorates a visit by Czech President Václav Havel.
Museum and Local Traditions
The Museum of the Bohemian Brethren in Zelów is the documentation centre for their history at the Evangelical Reformed parish. Its permanent exhibition traces the history of the Bohemian Brethren from their origins in Bohemia, through their settlement in Zelów and the surrounding area, to the present day. The collection includes historical everyday objects, furniture and machines, as well as weaving equipment: spindles, spinning wheels and handlooms. The focus is therefore on both the community’s history and objects from everyday life and weaving.

Discover History Along the Way
The historic tourist trail is ideal for a walk steeped in history. Its stops have QR-code signs that let you use your smartphone to listen to stories about local historical features. The stops are at the Evangelical Reformed Cemetery, the stone on Żeromskiego Street, the Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa, the Evangelical Reformed Church, Dąbrowski Square and the cultural centre building. For a cycling trip, a route starts in Zelów at Dąbrowski Square, where there is also a monument to Tadeusz Kościuszko. The blue, 41 km “Osady Braci Czeskich” trail also passes through Zelów. It is based on the cultural heritage of the Bohemian Brethren, including their history and material heritage.
