Skierniewice combines historic landmarks with a city park and the recreational area at Zalew Zadębie. This gives you different ways to plan your trip: explore the city’s architectural history, play an interactive game as you explore, or spend time by the water and enjoy other leisure activities. The experiences you want to prioritize can help you choose between a stay focused on cultural activities and days geared more toward exercise and relaxation.

City History in Different Places

The medieval architectural layout of the Market Square has been preserved to this day. Another landmark is the historic station of the Warsaw–Vienna Railway: it was built in 1874–1875 to a design by Jan Heurich the Elder in the so-called English Gothic Revival style. If you are interested in different architectural styles, you can include the city’s churches in your exploration alongside these landmarks.

The Neoclassical Church of St. James the Apostle was founded in 1781 by Primate Antoni Ostrowski and designed by Efraim Schreger. The Church of St. Stanislaus is the oldest church in Skierniewice and dates from 1720. Each has its own historical significance: the founder and architect of St. James are known, while St. Stanislaus stands out for its age.

Jewish heritage is also part of the city’s history. The first Jewish cemetery in Skierniewice dates from 1827. Several matzevot and the ohel of the tzaddik Szymon Kalisz have been preserved there. Hasidic pilgrims visit the tzaddik’s grave and traditionally leave notes there with requests. This distinctive religious practice differs from a focus on historic architecture and is a separate aspect of the city’s cultural heritage.

City Park and Cultural Discoveries

The city park features a French-style garden with sculptures and bridges connecting its main avenues. The Pałac Prymasowski, a former residence of the Archbishops of Gniezno dating from the 18th century, is located in the park. The historic park gate once led to this residence; today, it provides access to the city park and houses the Museum of the Traditions of the 26th Infantry Division. The Muzeum Historyczne Skierniewic is dedicated to sharing and protecting the cultural and historical heritage of the city and its surrounding area. If you want to focus on historic buildings and the region’s history, these offer several different themes to explore during your stay.

The Jabłcusiowy Szlak offers a playful way to explore Skierniewice. This interactive mobile game takes you around the city through tasks and discoveries of local historical features. It combines exploration with short puzzles, rather than introducing the city’s history exclusively through buildings and exhibitions.

Leisure at Zalew Zadębie

The recreational area at Zalew Zadębie is situated in the natural valley of the Łupia-Skierniewka River. Facilities include a lifeguarded swimming area, a beach, watercraft rentals and a wakeboard lift. This makes it a place for both a day at the beach and activities on the water. The area also has a pump track and supervised walking paths. When planning your day, you can choose between watersports, a session on the pump track and a walk, without treating these activities as interchangeable.

Festival and Regional Cuisine

The Skierniewickie Święto Kwiatów, Owoców i Warzyw is an annual three-day festival. Its program includes concerts, a parade, horticultural and regional markets, floristry demonstrations and culinary events. This variety makes the festival appealing to travelers who want to experience regional markets and events as well as city attractions during their stay. If you are planning your trip around it, the festival itself is a reason to choose dates that coincide with the event days.

A local specialty to try is Skierlotka, an apple cake from Skierniewice. It adds a culinary dimension to exploring the city without requiring a separate outing.
