Culture and Town History
The Collegiate Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Michael the Archangel in Łask was built in the late Gothic style between 1517 and 1523. It is also a highlight of the 318-kilometre Szlak Rowerowy Ziemi Sieradzkiej cycling route, which passes through Łask and showcases the church. Visitors interested in history and architecture can take this connection into account when choosing their excursions.
The Museum of the History of Łask has five exhibition rooms. On display are the exhibition “From the History of the Town and Region” and the permanent exhibition “The Town of Las-Kolumna – Extraordinary Stories”. The museum courtyard also features an open-air exhibition of old agricultural tools beneath a covered shelter. The museum offers workshops for children and themed historical walks through the town.
The Grabia, Routes and Water
The Mill Route along the Grabia starts at the railway station in the Kolumna district, passes through the Grabia Valley and the centre of Łask, and ends in Siedlce Łaskie. The yellow route is 36 kilometres long and suitable for walkers and cyclists. It combines preserved mill architecture with the natural surroundings of the Warta and Widawka Landscape Park. Another option for a longer trip is the green Szlak Turystyczny Okolic Pabianic: it is about 26 kilometres long, open to cyclists, and connects Łask with Pabianice. The Pabianice Route ends at Łask railway station.
For a stay by the water, the municipal outdoor swimming pool “Zajączek” is located beside a reservoir of around 2 hectares on the Grabia and Pisia rivers. It has a supervised bathing area with a beach. Kayaks and smaller sports and leisure equipment are available for hire during the summer holidays. Nearby, the Grabia Valley can be explored on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by kayak. The different options suit a range of preferences for activity and spending time outdoors, without requiring everyone to choose the same kind of excursion.
Kolumna and the Municipality
The Kolumna district is also known for its wooden villas with verandas. Built in the 1930s for summer visitors, many feature architecture described as Swiss style. The area is also associated with cultural events: “Pociąg do Kolumny – Akustycznie” (Train to Kolumna – Acoustically) grew out of an initiative by Kolumna residents and friends, and over the years has become an established fixture in the region’s cultural calendar.
Within the municipality of Łask, the Grabia and its tributaries, the Końska and Pałusznica, together with the surrounding forests, lie in a protected landscape area. The Grabia Valley is considered the municipality’s greatest natural and tourist attraction. Also within the municipality, the “Las-Kolumna” natural and scenic complex was established in 1993 to protect the old pine forest; it covers 365 hectares. These landscape features complement visits to the town with a focus on nature and walking routes.
Events and Getting Around
The recurring Rose Festival is a family picnic featuring activities for children, food and artistic performances. The festival includes trips to local rose fields, where the roses that have made Łask known beyond the region are grown. In the town’s history, the Jarmark Łaski dates back to the 15th century: it was a place where different ideas, intellectual movements, cultures and fashions met, and is considered the oldest local event.
Łódzka Kolej Aglomeracyjna serves the Kolumna, Dobroń and Łask railway stations. From there, the Grabia can be reached in a few minutes on foot or by bicycle. A tourist information point in Łask provides information about local attractions, cultural events, walking and cycling routes, and the museum and leisure offerings in the town and its surroundings.
