The Prosna and trails around Wieruszów

For kayaking enthusiasts, the stretch of the Prosna between Bolesławiec, Wieruszów, Kalisz and Pyzdry forms a 153 km kayak trail. Kayaks and pedal boats are available at the kayak landing in Kilińskiego Street. If you would like to complement your trip on the water with a route on land, the green “Around Wieruszów” recreational trail is 32.7 km long and starts and ends in Wieruszów. The different route lengths make it easier to plan your day around the distance you want to cover.

Other sections of trail offer access to the municipality’s landscape. The northern connecting section of the “Around Mieleszynek” route runs for 2.5 km within Wieruszów Municipality; the eastern connecting section runs entirely within the municipality for 2.9 km. The “To the Prosna” route follows the river through the “Dolina Prosny” protected landscape area. If nature is your main focus, you can include these routes in your itinerary without confusing them with the longer kayak trail.

Marianka Park: activity and leisure

A walking path runs along the Brzeźnica in Marianka Park, and there is also a footbridge and cycle bridge. Beyond the bridge are an artificial beach and a beach volleyball court. The park also includes an ecological playground, an event stage with an audience area, a high ropes course and a climbing wall. The park thus offers a range of leisure activities—from a walk by the river to sports and play.

Another attraction for children is the traffic education town on Krasickiego Street, which includes a recreation zone and educational games. Wieruszów’s skatepark is a sports and leisure facility with a modern pump track, a cycling track, an outdoor gym and a playground for the youngest visitors.

Churches, a monastery and traces of the town’s history

The documented history of the Pauline monastery complex in Wieruszów dates back to 1401. The complex’s single-nave brick Baroque Church of the Holy Spirit was completed in 1676. The church preserves the image of the Lord Jesus of the Five Wounds, also known as the image of Divine Mercy. It is considered miraculous and is described as the only surviving Gothic work of art in Wieruszów.

The former town layout can also be traced through individual sites. Wieruszów’s market square is a remnant of the medieval town layout and is a protected monument. On the left bank of the Prosna, near the mouth of the Niesób, remnants of the former castle survive. The original castle was probably built around the middle of the 14th century. This exploration of the town’s history connects a specific riverside location with its past, without implying that the castle survives as a standing structure.

Other dates mark the history of religious life: an independent Jewish community was established in Wieruszów in 1810, and a brick synagogue was built in 1850. The St. Spiritus parish cemetery includes Orthodox and Protestant cemeteries, as well as brick Catholic and Evangelical Augsburg chapels dating from the late 19th century. It is also home to the tomb of the Pauline monks and historic graves and tombstones dating from 1833 to 1916.

A variety of historic sites can be found nearby. In Cieszęcin, the wooden parish Church of St. Wojciech was built in 1789; in 1995, it was elevated to the status of the Diocesan Shrine of St. Wojciech for the Diocese of Kalisz. In Kuźnica Skakawska, the wooden Church of St. Roch dates from 1744. Its main altar is late Renaissance and dates from the first half of the 17th century. Two pedunculate oaks next to the church are designated natural monuments. An avenue of 96 red oaks along the local road to Kuźnica Skakawska is also designated a natural monument.

Other places have their own distinct character: the ring-shaped fortified settlement site in Kuźnica Skakawska covers approximately 48 hectares. In Lubczyna, a Neoclassical manor house built in 1913 is the focal point of the former Sczaniecki estate complex; it is surrounded by a 4.7-hectare historic park. Podzamcze is home to a Neo-Gothic Protestant church built in 1888.
