Magdalenów: Wooden Church and Ecclesiastical Art in the Local Area
Accommodation in Magdalenów
A direct way to explore the history of Magdalenów is to visit Mikołajewice, part of the locality. A wooden parish church stands there. Another perspective comes from historic buildings and works of art in Kwiatkowice, within the associated municipality. The two places offer different points of interest: a wooden church with a specific date in the register at one, and a brick church with a clearly described floor plan, altar, and other furnishings at the other.
The Wooden Church in Mikołajewice
The parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Mikołajewice is made of wood. The extract from the register of monuments dated September 30, 2025, lists it as dating from 1711–1720. This is the period given in the register for the building. This makes it possible to distinguish the church chronologically from the furnishings in Kwiatkowice, which are explicitly dated to the 17th century. The geographical setting is also important for planning your trip: Mikołajewice is part of Magdalenów, while Kwiatkowice is in the surrounding municipality.
Floor Plan and Architectural Features in Kwiatkowice
The brick church in Kwiatkowice is dedicated to Saint Dorothy and Saint Nicholas. Anna and Kacper Puczek of Sarnów founded it in 1606. It has a single-nave floor plan and faces east. The narrower chancel ends in a polygonal apse, meaning it has several sides. “Single-nave” describes the church’s main interior space; its orientation and the multi-sided end of the chancel are further features of its design. The ceiling and roof trusses are made of larch. Beside the church stands a brick bell tower with a wooden gable dating from the 17th century. The church’s materials, floor plan, and individual architectural features can thus be identified in more detail.
Altar, Pulpit, and Baptismal Font
The church interior offers several other historical points of interest and is early Baroque in style. The main altar dates from the late 17th century and depicts Mary with the Christ Child and Saint Nicholas. The church’s dedication to Saint Nicholas is thus also reflected in the altar’s imagery. The early Baroque pulpit depicts the four Evangelists. The baptismal font dates from the 17th century and has a wooden cover; the church also preserves a foundation plaque from 1606. The dates refer to different elements: the plaque commemorates the year of the church’s foundation, while the altar and baptismal font are each associated with the 17th century. For an art-historical perspective, it is therefore worth considering the building’s history and its furnishings without reducing them to a single date.
Another Historical Trace in Wodzierady
Two large graves in the forests of Wodzierady contain the remains of German and Russian soldiers killed in the First World War. Alongside church architecture and religious furnishings, the history of the war dead in the surrounding municipality also comes into view. The graves are a distinct historical point of reference, separate from the churches described in Mikołajewice and Kwiatkowice.
