Cycling routes: a loop or a route to Skomlin
The green Konopnica–Osjaków–Konopnica cycling route is 43.1 kilometres long and forms a loop around Konopnica. The second green route is longer, at 74.5 kilometres: it runs from Konopnica via Ostrówek, Czarnożyły and Biała to Skomlin. The route layouts make it easy to distinguish between a loop that returns to Konopnica and a ride with a different endpoint. The lengths also offer a clear comparison: the loop is 31.4 kilometres shorter than the route to Skomlin.
Both routes are marked in green. Check the local signage before setting off. The distances and places listed can help you tailor your choice of route to your own plans, without conflating the two routes: one goes around Konopnica, while the other passes through several named places on its way to Skomlin.
Architectural history from the 17th to the early 20th century
The parish church in Konopnica was completed in 1642 and features early Baroque architecture. The palace was built in the first half of the 19th century to a design by architect Henryk Markoni, in the Romantic Gothic style. The present-day watermill was built in the first decade of the 20th century. Together, these three dates span the period from the 17th century to the early modern era. The church and palace also provide a contrast between two distinct architectural styles: early Baroque and Romantic Gothic.
After its renovation, the palace opened as the “Dom Pracy Twórczej” of the Lodz University of Technology. If you plan to visit the palace, check current access arrangements in advance.
The Warta, Zamczysko and the historic park
Konopnica’s location on the Warta gives the town its geographical connection to the river. At Zamczysko are the remains of an early medieval conical hillfort. Its attribution to the Old Polish culture is considered likely. The site lies on the edge of the slope on the eastern bank of the Warta; the riverbank and the terrain are therefore part of the context for this archaeological site.
Another historic point of interest is the 2.60-hectare 19th-century manor park, which is considered historic. The park, church, palace and watermill offer different perspectives: landscape and manor history sit alongside religious architecture, Romantic Gothic and the more recent history of milling. The remains of the early medieval hillfort at Zamczysko add to this architectural history. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether you are drawn to Konopnica mainly for its cycling routes, its architectural history or a combination of both.
