The History of Wieluń’s Fortifications

The defensive walls enclosed the 12-hectare Old Town and were approximately 1,200 to 1,300 metres long. Wieluń was one of 25 towns surrounded by walls during the time of Casimir the Great. The fortifications were built after the town fire of 1335 and gradually replaced the wooden earthworks. They were constructed from local sandstone, with a brick crenellated parapet along the top.

Originally, there were no bastions, but there were two gates: the Kalisz Gate and the Kraków Gate. The western Kaliskie Gate was also known as the Dąbrowska Gate, while the eastern Krakowska Gate was known as the Rudzka Gate. These names and the recorded layout give the town’s history a tangible sense of place. The walls were not merely a structure, but part of the fortification of a sizeable Old Town.

Exhibitions at the Muzeum Ziemi Wieluńskiej

One exhibition room at the Muzeum Ziemi Wieluńskiej is devoted to finds from the period of Roman influence, associated with the Przeworsk culture from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD. Examples on display include terra sigillata and Roman coins. Another distinctive group consists of grave goods belonging to a blacksmith-goldsmith: tools for metalworking are on display. Numerous iron objects from everyday life and warfare round out the collection, as do reconstructions of weapons and dwellings from the period.

Those with a particular interest in the history of the fortifications and armed conflicts will find two more exhibition topics in the Baszta Męczarnia. “W izbie wieluńskiego kata” explores the history of Wieluń’s executioners and their work; items on display include clothing, equipment and typical instruments of torture. “Dzieje oręża w średniowieczu i w okresie staropolskim” focuses on the defensive role of the town and the involvement of Wieluń’s residents in armed conflicts from the town’s beginnings through the 17th century.

The exhibition topics also include a multimedia section: in “Dotknij historii Wielunia,” an animated legend about Prince Władysław Odonic’s hunt is also presented in 3D. For the Baszta Męczarnia, the museum lists visits from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 3 pm, after purchasing an admission ticket at the museum. Check the visiting conditions with the museum again before your trip.

Green Spaces and Outdoor Routes

Wieluń’s green spaces include a range of areas, each with its own history and character. Park Miejski im. Żwirki i Wigury was established in 1852 to a design by district engineer Karol Brochocki. It was laid out on the site of a former moat and the defensive walls, between today’s Śląska and Krakowskie Przedmieście streets, along Piłsudskiego Street. Lasek Miejski, by contrast, is a woodland park north of Wojska Polskiego Street; its main feature is a walking avenue running parallel to the street. The Wieluński Ogródek Botaniczny was established on ten hectares in Lasek Miejski between 1998 and 2000.

A different natural area is protected by the “Lasek Kurowski” nature reserve, established in 1983. It preserves natural oak-hornbeam woodland with firs, as well as alder carr and alder alluvial forest. These green spaces differ both in their layout and in their focus: park history, a walking avenue, a botanical garden and protected forest communities represent different sides of Wieluń.

A Route for Different Activities

The trail following the route of the Wieluń narrow-gauge railway includes a paved section of more than four kilometres within the municipality of Wieluń. It is intended for cyclists, walkers, horse riders and roller skaters. Signs along the route provide information about the railway’s history and display historical photographs. Two tourist service points have tables, benches and toilets; check the condition of the facilities before your visit. The trail thus combines outdoor exercise with insights into regional railway history, while allowing you to choose among the different activities on offer.

The museums and green spaces offer different themes to consider when planning your trip. You can follow the history of the medieval town fortifications, explore finds and exhibitions, or plan a stay with walks and other outdoor activities. When choosing a hotel, you can therefore think of Wieluń as a destination for a trip where city history, the museum and the landscape each appeal to different interests.
