Reservoir and dam on the Bystrzyca
The dam near Lubachow is 230 metres long along its crest and up to 44 metres high. It created a reservoir covering about 51 hectares, with a capacity of 8 million cubic metres of water. The body of water extends 3.1 kilometres along the river.
The Lubachów hydroelectric power plant is located on the river in Lubachow. The dam, reservoir and power plant are therefore closely connected with the Bystrzyca, but they are not interchangeable attractions: the dam is a structure with specific dimensions, the reservoir is a body of water with its own extent, and the power plant is a site of energy history. This distinction helps explain Lubachow’s character without reducing the place to a single feature.
The history of technology and historic buildings
The hydroelectric power plant building dates from 1913 to 1916 and is designated as both a power plant and a museum. The dam was completed in 1917. Many original features dating from the 1920s have also been preserved at the power plant. The same site thus brings together the building’s construction period, the completion of the dam and later technical equipment as distinct stages. For travellers interested in industrial and technological history, this provides a specific timeframe for Lubachow’s development.
The area’s earlier history is also part of the place: Lubachow contains an archaeological protected area for a group of mining sites dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Another historic structure is a railway bridge over a stream and an unpaved road. It dates from 1902 to 1904 and is located at the level of the hydroelectric power plant and a residential building. These structures point to different uses and periods; they do not form a single, contemporaneous complex.
Nature, cycling and themed discoveries
Lubachow is one of the places in Świdnica Municipality with natural monuments. There are 18 such natural monuments across the municipality. Anyone who wants to include nature alongside architectural and technological history in their travel plans can connect this municipal context with their other impressions of the area.
Three distinct points of interest for cycling and exploring Lubachow are a municipal tourism project, a training park and a quest. A tourism infrastructure project by Świdnica Municipality included a bicycle station in the area. There is also a park where you can practise a range of skills for singletracks and bike parks. The “Tajemnice Śląskiej Doliny” quest runs through Lubachow and its surroundings, visiting places of interest along the Bystrzyca.
