Groß Merzdorf (Marcinowice) can be explored through its historic buildings and places of remembrance. At its heart is the branch church of St. Wacław; other local traces include a brick school building, surviving buildings of the former railway station, and a tomb. They lead to different themes in the village’s history: sacred architecture, education, railways, and personal remembrance. This provides a cultural focus for planning your trip, with a story that unfolds through specific buildings, dates, and names.

St. Wacław: History in Several Building Phases

The parish describes the branch church of St. Wacław as the most valuable historic monument in Marcinowice. It was built in 1500 and destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. It was rebuilt or newly constructed in the first half of the 18th century. The late Baroque church from this period was built on the foundations of a Renaissance church dating to around 1500. Renaissance and late Baroque thus refer to two different building phases: the original structure around 1500 and the later construction in the first half of the 18th century.

The furnishings also offer several clues to their dates. The Baroque furnishings include painted wooden altars from the 18th century and oil paintings from the same century. There is also a wooden pulpit decorated with Protestant imagery, dating from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The altars and paintings therefore point to the 18th century, while the pulpit marks a later period. This comparison helps make the chronology of the church furnishings clear without assigning them all to a single building phase.

School, Railway Station, and Personal Remembrance

Two buildings beyond the church add to the picture of the village. At 67 Kolejowa Street stands a brick school building dating from the early 20th century. Buildings of the former railway station from the early 20th century also survive in Marcinowice. The dates are close, but the buildings point to different themes: school construction and railway history. Together with the older history of St. Wacław, they create a contrast in time between sacred architecture and institutions from the early 20th century.

The grave of Angela Hilcher, a pre-war resident of the village who was buried in 1920, is located in the churchyard. Her name and the specific year add a personal remembrance to the architectural history. The local cemetery is also suggested as a destination for a walk. Alongside the buildings, visitors can therefore discover a named place of remembrance and a historical figure.
