Discover Bierutów: City Walls, Churches and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Bierutów
A preserved medieval town plan, the city walls and buildings from several centuries give Bierutów a strong cultural and historical character. There are also practical ways to enjoy active days: two signposted cycling routes with different starting points, and a water route on the Widawa. If you would like to combine culture and exercise on a trip to Poland, you can plan these activities separately and compare the route distances and stated journey times.

Townscape and Architectural History
The ring of Bierutów’s city walls was probably built in the first half of the 14th century on the site of an earth-and-timber fortification. In the 15th century and early 16th century, it was reinforced with towers at three gates. Together with the preserved medieval town plan, the fortifications tell an important part of the town’s history.
The town hall has probably stood in the middle of the market square since the first half of the 15th century. Today, only the tower remains, without its spire. The 15th-century Gothic town hall tower plays the Bierutów Hejnał, composed by a local musician, every day at 12 noon. If you would like to hear the hejnał, this midday performance gives you a specific time to plan around.
The Gothic castle church of St Catherine, formerly Protestant, was built in the first half of the 13th century or earlier. The church contains a Baroque high altar dating from 1661. The building thus brings together several historical layers: its early construction and a later Baroque feature.
Only the main walls of the former Protestant cemetery church of the Holy Trinity remain. It stands in the town park, in front of the former Wrocław Gate. The park was laid out on the cemetery grounds after 1945, so the church’s history and the later use of the cemetery site can be considered together.
The parish church of St Joseph was built between 1891 and 1893 in the Neo-Gothic style. Compared with the Gothic Church of St Catherine and the Baroque altar, it adds another architectural period to the picture: the Neo-Gothic style of the late 19th century.
Cycling Routes and the Widawa
There are several options for cycling, with routes that differ in their starting points. The red-marked PTTK cycling route “Trasa folwarków” starts in the courtyard of Bierutów Castle, is about 20 kilometres long and takes 2.5 to 3 hours. The green-marked “Trasa Doliny Widawy” starts at Bierutów railway station; it is about 30 kilometres long, with a stated journey time of three hours. The red route is shorter by distance, while the stated journey times are similar. Check the current signposting before relying on it for navigation on the green route.
Bierutów has a specially prepared spot for launching kayaks. The kayak landing on the banks of the Widawa is also suitable for bivouacking. A water route of more than 40 kilometres runs by kayak from Bierutów to a suburb of Wrocław and can be completed in several hours. Navigability varies along the river depending on the season, so check the river conditions before setting out.
