The Basilica of St Hedwig is considered the oldest sanctuary in Silesia and one of the important necropolises of the Silesian Piasts. As a place sanctified by devotion to Saint Hedwig, it is at the heart of the town’s religious history, which can also be traced on walks through Trzebnica. The architecture also tells the story of the sanctuary: the second chapel was built in 1268–1269 and is considered the first building in Poland constructed in a purely Gothic style. In the former Cistercian monastery, the Sister Olimpia Konopka Museum presents the monastery’s heritage as well as the history of the Cistercian nuns and the Borromean Sisters. This offers two distinct perspectives: the architectural history of the sanctuary and the history of the religious communities at the monastery museum.

Two Trails Associated with Saint Hedwig

The Great Trail of Saint Hedwig is a 7 km circular route. It starts and ends in the square in front of the basilica and runs mainly along field and forest paths through the surrounding hills and suburbs of Trzebnica. The route is suitable for walkers and cyclists. It combines outdoor activity with stops that refer to Hedwig’s life and virtues: along the trail are seven associated sites and seven meditation stones representing the saint’s virtues.

The Little Trail of Saint Hedwig has a different focus. Located on the pilgrimage grounds, it comprises 15 stone stations and is intended for prayer and quiet contemplation. The two trails therefore differ both in form and purpose: the Great Trail is a loop through hills and suburbs, while the Little Trail, with its stations, offers space for prayer and reflection. If you’re looking for a connection to Hedwig, you can decide whether a longer outdoor walk or contemplation on the pilgrimage grounds matters more to you.

Activities and Discoveries for Families

Gminny Park Wodny TRZEBNICA-ZDRÓJ offers more than a swimming section. Activities include the Hydra Trzebnica underwater hockey section, swimming lessons for children and adults, aqua aerobics, water rehabilitation and holiday camps. The outdoor area is open seasonally; it has outdoor slides, a children’s playground with a paddling pool and a beach volleyball court. This distinction matters when choosing when to travel: the park’s listed activities and seasonal use of the outdoor area are not the same thing.

Another discovery in town is Kocia Ścieżka. This attraction features cat sculptures placed at several locations around the town and is aimed at children and tourists. It provides a lighter, more playful contrast to the basilica, monastery museum and sites associated with Hedwig. This means you can choose experiences that suit different interests without every activity having the same cultural or religious focus.
