An English-Style Park and a Neoclassical Palace
The 67-hectare English-style park was modelled on the park in Wörlitz near Dessau. Together with the palace, it is a distinctive historic landmark of the town. Carl Gotthard Langhans extensively remodelled the palace, giving it its present Neoclassical appearance. The townscape thus brings together an expansive park and a building with a clearly defined architectural style.
The historic park complex included leisure facilities designed by Langhans: a bathing pavilion, a tea house, a wine tavern, a wine house, a mill and a foresterâs house. These buildings are part of the history of the site. Those interested in the development of the palace park will find various examples here of the functions the complex once served.
Chapels, a Garden and Local Folklore
Different aspects of the townâs history can also be discovered around St Hedwigâs. The former parish church of St Hedwig was built in 1665 and now serves as a cemetery chapel. The chapel is considered one of Brzeg Dolnyâs most important monuments. A local legend tells of a stone said to bear the footprint of St Hedwig. This is explicitly a legendâa different way of approaching history from the documented construction date and present-day function of the chapel.
The Borromean Sistersâ monastery complex also includes a courtyard called Jadwiga Garden, with a sculpture of St Hedwig. The park, palace and these smaller places of remembrance offer various starting points for a stay focused on cultural history, rather than directing attention to the palace alone.
Rope Park: Five Courses with Different Requirements
Established in 2010 as a place for active recreation, the rope park has five courses. âInicjacjaâ runs at a height of up to 1 m and has three stations; this course is open to all participants. âRokitekâ runs at a height of 2â3 m and has nine stations. It is intended for children up to the fourth grade of primary school. The other three courses are intended for teenagers and adults.
âBorutaâ has ten stations at a height of 3â4 m, âCzortâ has nine stations at 4â5 m, and âRokiĆâ has six stations at a height of 6â9 m. The different heights, number of stations and requirements help you see the courses as distinct options, rather than treating the rope park as a single, uniform offering.
Cycling and Public Transport along the Oder
Brzeg Dolny is on the Oder Cycle Route. The road bridge over the Oder provides access to routes along both banks of the river. A cycle route connected to the Oder Cycle Route crosses the bridge towards MiÄkinia; in the other direction, it continues via Radecz and GodziÄcin towards Ć»migrĂłd.
Brzeg Dolny is also a hub on the Oder Trail in the Kraina ĆÄgĂłw OdrzaĆskich network, where various hiking trails and transport routes meet. A quest runs on foot between the Oder riverbank and the railway station; a kayaking trip can begin or end in connection with it. The âKolej na Kajakiâ and âKolej na Roweryâ services combine public transport with kayaking trips and cycle tours on the Oder Cycle Route, respectively. As timetables and organisational details can change, it is worth checking current connections and arrangements before planning.
Brzeg Dolny therefore offers several concrete starting points when choosing a destination: the history of the palace, park and chapels, distinct rope park courses, and routes and activities centred on cycling and the Oder. Consider which of these themes matters most for your trip when comparing hotels in Brzeg Dolny and planning your stay in Poland.
