Cycling trails, the Oder River and protected landscapes
The yellow Wołów–Wrzosy–Moczydlnica Klasztorna–Orzeszków cycling trail is about 16 kilometres long and runs through the Dolina Jezierzycy Landscape Park. This gives the route a specific distance and a landscape setting that can serve as a distinct focus when planning a trip. Another route with a stated distance is the “Cudne Manowce” cycling trail, which is 38 kilometres long.
The blue Oder River Trail also offers clear orientation: its section in Powiat wołowski begins in Brzeg Dolny. Within the district, the Oder serves as a water route. The Cistercian Trail is also part of the signposted long-distance trail network. These routes offer different ways to explore the area without needing to combine them into a single tour.
There is a campsite in Budków, suitable for a break and some time to relax in nature. The village is on the cycling trail along the Oder. A circular route there passes through the Oder floodplain, by old river channels and across a wet meadow.
The district’s appealing landscapes for visitors also include wooded dune ridges. The Jodłowice Nature Reserve offers a specific glimpse of protected woodland: it covers 9.36 hectares and lies within the municipalities of Brzeg Dolny and Oborniki Śląskie. It protects a mixed forest with fir trees that grow here at the edge of their range. The Jodłowice Natura 2000 site, code PLH020106, lies entirely within the nature reserve.
At Zalew Słup there is a bathing area managed by the municipal sports, tourism and recreation centre in Wińsko. Swimming is seasonal, making the lake another seasonal point of interest when planning a trip.
Urban history and industrial traces
Wołów (Wohlau) brings together several historical themes in one town: the town hall dates from the second half of the 15th century, while the Piast castle is dated to 1157. The organs built by Adam Casparini in 1716 have been preserved in St Lawrence’s Church. The town hall, castle and organs represent different chapters in the town’s history.
Brzeg Dolny also combines historic architecture with a park. The historic park complex included a bathing pavilion designed by Langhans, a tea house, a wine cellar, a wine pavilion, a mill and a forester’s house.
In Konary, Franz Achard opened the world’s first sugar factory in 1801, with the support of King Frederick William III of Prussia. A monument to Achard and the remains of the sugar factory have been preserved there. Archaeological evidence of iron smelting goes back much further: the district’s attractions for visitors include relevant sites, among them the bloomery furnaces in Tarchalice. Together, these places offer a glimpse into very different periods of economic and technological history.
Special places and views
