Zgorzelecki County lies on Poland’s southwestern edge, at the tripoint with the Czech Republic and Germany. Its travel experiences range from Lusatian architecture and museums to protected landscapes and designated trails. The county’s towns and railway stations offer a starting point for choosing a base; those wishing to explore the region by bike can follow a specific route, the ER-4.

Lusatian Architecture and Museums

Lusatian half-timbered and log-house construction is characteristic of the county. The largest concentration of Lusatian half-timbered houses is in the municipality of Bogatynia. There you can also see Dom Zegarmistrza at 17 Waryńskiego Street, a model restoration of a Lusatian half-timbered house. In Radomierzyce, an 18th-century Baroque residence adds to the picture of the region’s architectural history; its complex includes a palace park.

In Zgorzelec, the Muzeum Łużyckie is devoted to the history, culture and everyday life of the inhabitants of the Polish part of Upper Lusatia. Its permanent exhibition includes a fully furnished Lusatian room from the 17th and 18th centuries. Another focus of remembrance is the Muzeum Kresów Wschodnich in Węgliniec, where memorabilia are collected from the eastern border regions from which residents moved after the end of the Second World War. The historic Ścieżka Pamięci information trail is part of the visitor experience at the Stalag VIII A memorial site.

Protected Areas and Landscape

The Przełomowa Dolina Nysy Łużyckiej Natura 2000 site lies along the Lusatian Neisse in the municipalities of Bogatynia and Zgorzelec. It covers 1,661.7 hectares. The Torfowisko nad Węglińcem nature reserve in the municipality of Węgliniec protects something quite different: across 1.35 hectares, it safeguards a transitional bog with native vegetation and a relict population of bog pine, Pinus × rhaetica.

The scale of the forest landscape is also remarkable: Uroczyska Borów Dolnośląskich in the municipality of Węgliniec covers 8,067.8 hectares. The area lies within the catchment areas of the Lusatian Neisse and the Kwisa, on nutrient-poor sandy soils, and is one of the largest forest areas in Central Europe. The county is also home to the “Torfowisko pod Węglińcem” nature trail.

By Bike, Rail and at Festival Time

The ER-4 cycling route runs from Zgorzelec to Lwówek Śląski through Zgorzelecki County. The “Worek Turoszowski” tourist trail also passes through the county and is 61.5 kilometres long.

The county’s main railway stations are another useful reference point for planning rail travel. They include Węgliniec; others are located in Zgorzelec Miasto and Ujazd. The Węgliniec railway junction plays an important role in rail transport in Zgorzelecki County and the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.

A shared cultural event is “Jakuby”, Zgorzelec’s Old Town Festival, which takes place simultaneously in Zgorzelec and Görlitz.

Lower Silesia as a Wider Travel Destination

Further afield in Lower Silesia, the Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica add to the region’s cultural landscape. They are Europe’s largest timber-framed Baroque churches, built in the mid-17th century under the terms of the Peace of Westphalia and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. This broader view of Lower Silesia expands the cultural context; the county’s half-timbered architecture, museums and landscapes remain distinctive points of interest in their own right.
