History from Rauscha to Ruszów
The earliest mentions of the former settlement of Rauscha (Ruszów) date back to 1438. It first belonged to the von Penzig family from Pieńsk; later, it was acquired by the Zgorzelec town council. Until 1708, it had a glassworks, a brewery, a distillery and a manor farm. The town’s history thus combines an early reference with a documented succession of owners and several different enterprises.
The dates refer to different milestones: 1438 marks the earliest mentions, while 1708 sets the timeframe for the enterprises listed. The variety of activities is also of interest when exploring Ruszów’s history: glassmaking, brewing and distilling are mentioned alongside the manor farm. The town’s history cannot therefore be reduced to a single date or a single trade.
Memorial sites and their stories
The Broad Stone commemorates Prince Wilhelm II’s successful capercaillie hunt. Its inscription records that the prince shot his first capercaillie there on 23 April 1879. The reference point is therefore a specific hunting story with an exact date.
Another memorial site is by the church ruins in the cemetery in Ruszów, where commemorative plaques have been erected. The Broad Stone and the plaques represent different historical connections: here, an inscription about a hunt; there, plaques at the church ruins. If you are interested in local history, you can include these sites as separate topics in your travel plans rather than combining them into a single story.
Jagodowe Lato: festival, date and food
Jagodowe Lato is a recurring open-air festival in Ruszów. The 2024 edition took place in the town park; 12 July was announced for the 2025 edition.
Food on offer at Jagodowe Lato included homemade blueberry pierogi, chips made from local potatoes, cakes, grilled pork neck and sausages, vegetable salads, bread, and fresh blueberry jams from Edyta and Gosia. The selection ranges from sweet blueberry dishes to savoury food, adding a culinary dimension to the cultural event.
For the festival, an up-to-date date is important when planning your trip; the town’s history, by contrast, offers several concrete points of interest from different periods. Before your trip, check whether a current date for Jagodowe Lato has been announced.
