Discover Święta Katarzyna: History, Park and Activities

Święta Katarzyna combines local history with a park offering walking paths and places to play, as well as a sports complex. When planning your trip, it is worth exploring these different sides of the town: historic memorial sites, time outdoors and physical activity each offer something distinct. This lets you plan your days around the interests of your travel group.

Local history and cultural heritage

Święta Katarzyna’s history includes the ruins of an early Gothic church from the 13th century, dedicated to Saint Catherine. German soldiers blew up the church towards the end of the Second World War. At the junction of ul. Główna and ul. Dąbrowskiego, there is also a former German obelisk commemorating the victims of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871. These two historical subjects belong to different eras and provide a historical context for the townscape.

You can learn about the local historical heritage at the Izba Pamięci „Terra Nostra”, run by the Centrum Kultury w Siechnicach. The exhibition includes everyday objects, documents, photographs, books, newspapers, diplomas and other mementos from the pre-war and post-war periods. Its wide range brings together personal records of everyday life with written and photographic memories. The library in Święta Katarzyna also displays three surviving glass panels from a former dance floor. If you would like to visit these attractions, check the local visitor arrangements in advance.

The town’s architectural and religious history is also among its points of interest: the convent of the Sisters of Saint Elizabeth on ul. Główna was built in 1895 to a design by German architect Mansuetus Fromm. The Church of Saint Catherine holds the status of a Marian shrine. Together with the church ruins and war memorials, these sites offer different historical perspectives without merging into a single memorial site.

Time in the park and activities for children

The park in Święta Katarzyna has walking paths and a children’s playground. In 2020, a 20-metre-long zip line for children aged 3 to 12 was installed in the park on ul. Kolejowa. The park’s listed amenities therefore include both paths for a stroll and places to play. During the park’s redevelopment, new benches, loungers and waste bins were installed in 2019. If you plan to use the zip line or rely on the facilities installed at that time, check their current availability or condition before your visit.

Sports and activities

The sports complex at ul. Główna 4 includes a sports hall with spectator seating and changing facilities, a multi-purpose pitch with artificial turf, and a fitness trail. This brings together different forms of sporting activity in one place: the hall, pitch and trail each offer a different focus. If you plan to use these facilities at a specific time, check the current terms of use in advance.

Train station and getting around

The train station is also part of the town’s history: in 1842, the first train in the history of Lower Silesia travelled from Breslau (Wrocław) to Oława, passing through the station in Święta Katarzyna. There are parking spaces for cars and bicycles close to the station.
